What if you put a Dokken or a GWAR shirt on the 4Runner? Would it rock then?

Rock on!

I don't think a Rolling Stones shirt and a passed out Keith Richards in the back seat could make that thing rock but have fun w/ it Joe, I hear it holds lots of groceries.

hey wait guys...we are all forgetting that both the 4Runner and our Discos can get their asses kicked by the Pathfinder!!!!!!

I hate that stinkin' pathfinder so much...they stole every possible feature off the disco, except their off-road capability!!!

funny thing about the 4runner - went to toyota.com
and there is NO 4x4 available ! not sure if delayed intro or what....

so if joeslob is really doing so - he's trading in for a 4x2.... personally i can't get past the engorged side clading - what's up with that? it's a truck - not a transformer....!!

can't think of the name for it in japanese - but in english i translates to 'surface entertainment'. the 4run has all sorts of scoops and bulges... reminds me of the 84 supra in that way.

Whoops, I forgot about the Firestone Option, Jake. I still dig the FL though. Having driven two of them, they are a fun capable vehicle.

looks like a cross between honda crv & chevy avalanche. I like this bogus advertising picture from toyota's website - what an Xtreeeeeme angle (from http://www.toyota.com/images/shop/vehicles/gallery/four_runner/exterior/photo_2.jpg):

wouldn't all the groceries spill out at that angle?

Actually (dons head to toe nomex), the mid nineties 4Runner RV6 that you can buy here in oz is very popular and a fairly capable machine. Huuge aftermarket options, a bit of grunt, good reliability (save for one recall they had when new) and good resale. Lots of things my disco doesnt have. Theyre no where near as spacious though and at the of the day, theyre two cylinders short of a proper engine.
Its much easier to get the Disco valet parked too!
I like em, so there!

rocks obey gravity just like everything else. Those rocks don't look happy. look at the pic and tilt your head 45 degrees to the right - now don't the rocks look stable & happy?

also note the gap between tops of tires & fender arches. Shouldn't there be a big gap in that right rear? compare to 4runner on level ground:

"funny thing about the 4runner - went to toyota.com

I'm not defending the 4-runner, but I think they have all-time 4WD now on all models. I think this is because they double for the new G-Lexus.

"So how much did Toyota pay the Nepal Goverment to have that Toyota air lifted up there to K2 Base Camp? "

K2 is in Pakistan, Everest is in Nepal.

"K2 is in Pakistan, Everest is in Nepal"

Yes, Mr. Ryanspeed, you are correct. The summit of Everest actually seperates Nepal and Tibet, whereas K2 (the mountain) covers a bit of China / Tibet and Pakistan.

But since the Pakistani's bought Eurocopter products and Nepal bought Russian Heavy Lift; guess who is going to do the job? :) Once you get to the level of which these Helos can operate, it's all about SHP and Big ass Rotor Blades.

Funny thing too about those rocks, no way a scree field of glacial debree like that one the toy is picured on would be that stable enough at that angle to hold the weight of that truck unless it was frozen solid. You have to see some kind of evidence of those rocks being pushed down in front of the tires as the slope settled when the truck came to a stop. I would think that would occur even if the truck was air lifted to that exact spot. I also don't think anyone would try a spring or winter time shot because of the risk to get to that location in those times of year. Kind of nice to see that advertizing suv's for there rugged ablity doesn't need any relationship to reality. What have we americans come to the rest of the world? A bunch of poser wanks that need these macho trucks to prove we have(are?) the biggest dicks?
Sorry, I really need a beer... and I'm pissed about the fact I was in park city on sunday drinking. I came out of the bar and walked behind some obvious tourists. We came to where my lifted, racked, bull bared, truck sat and in front was a new Navigator with bling bling 22"s. The group never even noticed my discovery and were saying that the lincoln was the greatest truck ever and incredible on and offroad. One said "the best thing I ever drove in the snow...". Why do we americans buy all the shit they feed us?

I really need a beer...

Paul,

Thanks for the lesson on helicopters, but my comment was in reference to the fact that you said the car was flown into "K2 basecamp". My comment meant to imply that picture has nothing to do with K2, as evident in the caption "Mt. Everest basecamp".
If you want to get picky, the picture of Everest in the background is from the Chinese side. However, I said it was in Nepal in Reference to your statement that it was flown in by Nepal.

SO, what kind of helicopters does China have??

My uncle has a '98 4-Runner, and it has always been a reliable vehicle...he is never really taken it off-road though. Toyota is doing a G4 type thing around Everest with the new 4-Runners. I will say though, the picture looks quite unrealistic, but a soccer mom or some yup would be all over it like a rat on a Cheeto!

The older 4-runners (other than the IFS) were not that bad. I don't know how sturdy they were but with the long wheel base they're not going anywhere. Sad but if you look at the web page for the Toy's they at least still list approach/departure angles and such while I can't seem to even find anything other than ground clearance on the Land Rover site. And not to defend the Toy but it still has a Limited Slip Locking Center Diff. That's more than the NAS D2 has.

But seems they're also using HDC (DAC)

Will, the Older 4 Runners are great rigs handicapped only by their IFS....sheeeet at least they came with the CDL....thank FAWKING GOD that Rover seems to be waking up.
Everytime I wheel with my cousin, 1/4 the time I'm pissing and moaning about how stupid LR was for not specing the CDL lever on Geo's '00...another 1/4 of the time thanking GOD that it has the ETC....the other 1/2 the tme is just normal heh heh...well some of that last half is complaining about George not installing the CDL kit yet.

Hey Ryan,

If China flys it, Russia either built it or designed it for them. :)

As far as the 4runner thing goes, there is still a soft spot in my heart for the 80's era Isuzu Trooper. Very simple and fun to drive.

Have a happy,

Paul

The fact remains, turn your head sideways and its pretty easy to see that the car is sat flat (or else why is not pitched to the left front on the suspension) on a big field of rock clearly at a lower altitude than pictured. If you need more proof, how about the little green shrubs in the fore ground, not affected by snow and (if you dont turn your head) growing perpendicular to the side of the hill.
My theory is, it was flown in to a nice flat section of rock that is 1.2km north (NOT above!) of the everest base camp. the shot was taken and back at the ad office they just cut it out, tipped it sideways and layed it over a shot of Everest (taken from the China side!). Its pretty basic. If you ask me it constitutes false advertising but I guess nowhere on there does it claim the vehicle was actually driven to that spot, or in fact that the photo is real.
At the end of the day, it got a whole bunch or LR diehards discussing it for a solid 3 days! Any publicity is good publicity.....

Hmmm-

This is a tough thread for me. Here's why: we've got three SUVS, a '94 Disco 5 sp. YEAH!!- wife's loves it (it's her car), runs great, gets 17 mpg, dog thinks the back is comfy, has 3 or 4 leaks, uses 3/4 of a quart per 1000 miles at 75mph, has 170,000.

Mine is a '91 Bronco with 300ci. I6 5sp., dual front shocks, runs great, gets 17 mpg, it's wide enough to fit a 4x8 sheet, has no leaks, uses no oil and the dog begs to sleep in it in the driveway. Has 175,000. Top comes off.

Extra car is an '89 4 Runner 4 cyl 5 sp, it's narrow enough to sneak anywhere, long enough to outreach swb spinouts, came with solid steel wheels, top comes off, it's got a 22RE and gets 25mpg, dog thinks the full rubber mat is a little slick, 135,000 and not a hint of a leak.

Question is: Which one am I supposed to like best?

you need to get a range rover and ditch the disco and bronko...

you can fit a sheet of 4 x 8 ply wood in the RR

keep the TOY as your "reliable" car

Hmmm...

Rocks aren't displaced...

Rocks would not support the Toyota anyway...

Rocks are not frozen, as green plants are present...

Green plants grow perpendicular to rocks, in contrast to the angle of the rocky plane...

The apparent elevation of the rocky plane is inconsistant with the elevation of the mountain in the background...

The shadow under the vehicle is inconsistant with the shadows cast on the mountain in the background...

The suspension is level...

A vehicle with running boards like that would have to be airlifted into such a position...

I don't see a carwash...

I wouldn't like to wash a car on that slippery hill...

It's a composit computer image, ok? There... I said it.

Cheers,

Kennith
