Hi all,

I'm considering purchasing a 94 Discovery, 118K miles, auto transmission. The vehicle is cosmetically in excellent shape and the engine seems to have plenty of power. A fair amount of oil and grease on bottom side of engine though. The thing is fairly noisy, engine, transmission, road noise, though I understand that's normal.

It looks like the dashboard has been taken apart and not put back together properly (or impossible to put back together?). Where the dash meets the windshield, the dash is not tucked under the black thing (sorry) and is at a 30-40% angle from flat. This is the only cosmetic problem.

Can someone tell me what to look for as potential problems and things that may go wrong at this mileage. Sorry for being so open ended.

I haven't owned a Landrover before.

Bring it to a Land Rover dealer, best $89. I ever spent. First car I looked at looked great, untill they went over it. Second car was the one for me.

Tom, Ive got '94.
Get one with as few flash, electrical gadgets as you can bare. Its less to go wrong and you dont really need em anyway. Other than that, I love it. oh yeah and if its a V8, get friendly with your local fuel station, youre going to need your own parking space there. Enjoy.

Tom,

Look at the dash a little closer: does it look like, the glue came undone and the visible part has curled up away from the metal underneath?

This is an unfortunately common occurrance on '94-95 Discos, if not later ones (I've not seen later ones curl, but it seems as if all '94 and '95 ones curl). It is just cosmetic. Some dealerships will replace the dash, others refuse. Some will install a fix-kit, others will charge you for the fix-kit. http://www.roverconnection.com/Disco%20Acc%20Pix/rcdsh.htm

FWIW.....

Hi Tom I'm Keith and i'm a Roverholic...
Do you have any idea WHAT you're getting into!!!
Start with the thousands of $$$$ Spent Accesorizing... Then you'll spend zillions of hours searching British websites for better deals and little tricks for your toy... Next your wife will threaten you with divorce because you love your truck more than her....
Need I say more.... That dash thing on the early ones sounds like what had been mentioned before..
Otherwise it's pretty much a normal auto ... As always with a used car it's buyer beware... Find a mechanic that knowsabout them and have him look it over...And definately look at and drive more than just a couple!

Well I didn't buy the '94... I bought a '97 in excellent condition. Obviously garaged and never taken off-road. Black exterior, tan leather, with rhino kit. $3K under book price.

I did want a 91/92 Toyota Landcruiser but drove three which had serious problems. Also, for some reason they are fatiguing to drive compared to the Land Rover.
