I need some input. I have a 99 D ll. Just installed cdl handle and went off roading on Sunday. There is now a whinning sound coming from the under the middle of the car. It occurs only when the vehicle is slowing and disappears as soon as any throttle is applied. It happens in all gears and neutral. Took it by good suspension shop and the guy is convinced it is a differential. Says things are worn (32k on the truck) or out of adjustment. Said he has heard the exact same sound when rebuilding diffs and backlash is off. Any ideas?

Sounds like the center diff is still engaged. Transfer case on a D1 whines when the center diff is locked.

David, after all that driving you maight have already but have you gone in reverse? Try shifting in and out of drive and reverse a few times and apply a bit of gas to get all the gears moving. Try that to correct the problem.
As stated above the center diff might still be engaged. This can be a common problem and it will happen even with the CDL lock light off.

Thanks for the input. Yes I have in reverse. I don't hear it in the low range, but I barely got up to 30 mph in low. I forgot to mention, the sound disappears as soon as speed dips below 20 mph. How do I check/disengage the cdl if the handle is not doing the job and the light is off?

Put your window down, turn on a hard left or right lock and move fwd slowly. If you hear the tyres scuffing and slipping as you turn, your CDL is still in. If you hear nothing it might just be wear. If you hear nothing and bang your head, you forgot to wind your window down.

I tried your idea, and there was no scuffing sound. I then locked the cd and repeated the technique. I could feel the vehicle "binding". No binding with the cdl off. Any other possible causes? Had the 30k service done at the dealer and drove through a large mud hole on sunday. Changed the rear diff oil yesterday. The sound is really stressing me. Any other ideas?

Nice one. Well at least you now know the CDL is locking and unlocking.
I assume, as DIIs use the etc instead of CDL predominantly, that the CDL would have the appropriate type and amount of oil in it?
Maybe its time to trade up to a DI...

Thanks for the help. Turned out to be the rear diff. Good news is that the vehicle has been repaired under warranty.

as odd as it may sound, but I heard LR's line about not installing the CDL lever in D2s for that very reason - noise transmitted in the cabin from a gear-driven transfer case.

FWIW, my Disco's very whiney (compared to chain-driven jeep and range rover, and another gear-driven jeep).
