I have a '97 D1 (90K mi) and recently overhauled my swivel balls/front hubs and inspected my front brake pads and calipers. I discovered that one pad out of the four was extremely more worn than the rest to the point it is extremely apparent. Obviously, my PS caliper needs work, and I have ordered the rebuild kit along with the pads. My question is: How often does a front caliper need to be replaced as opposed to simply rebuilt? I understand that there is a slight chance that the pistons could be worn to the point that the entire caliper needs replacing. How do I know this? What are the signs? And, if the pistons are worn, can they be replaced along with the rebuild kit? Sorry for the long post but I "have to build you a clock". |

Calipers will "never" need replacing...just rebuilds...that is: If they corrode heavily internally (so the bores cannot be honed), or they are heavily scored by rusted pistons, new ones are your option. I'd be surprised if you need more than a rebuild. Corrosion on the pistons are quite common, so I hope you included that in your order. If they're corroded, you need to replace them - and do all of them while you're at it. Ottos site explains how to rebuild: http://home.halden.net/discovery Easy-peasy job - and very satisfying. Thanks Frode. Actually, my next question/post was going to be "how the hell do I do this"? |
