Ok, on my wife's 1999 D2, no dome lights working whatsoever. If you have the ignition switched on and ALL doors shut, you get a slight glowing from the bulb in the "ON" position. Checked voltage and got nothing whatsoever with the switch in any position with the keys out of the ignition. With the ignition on, and all door shut, got 12 volts with the light switch in the "ON" and "OFF" position, but no power in the middle position. Light won't light up with the exception of the very faint glowing mentioned above. I'm thinking that perhaps there is something grounding out, but I'm far from an expert on this matter. Where is the door "pin" switch on the D2, mine was in the door jam. I'm guessing that it's inside the door in the D2? Help me, por favor! Thanks.. Rob

I went and looked in my D2 yesterday and didn't see the plungers. I too would guess they are inside the door panel.

That is a mysterious Gremilin.

Eliminate the obvious first, and check your fuses. On my D1 i blew the fuse on the cd changer/dome light circuit. I still got 12 volts on the cd changer plug, but could draw very little amperage, of course. When I opened any of the doors, the domelight would blink 4 times, then go out. In the drivers manual this phenomenon is described, it is supposed to do this as an indicator of the domelight fuse being blown. This is british electrics at it's finest, go figure.....

My point here being that whenever a Rover exhibits weird an unexplained electrical behavior, start with the fuses.

I've been thinking about your problem. On my D2, if I accidently leave a door open, the computer will shut off my lights until I close all the doors and restart the engine. Then everything returns to normal. I wonder if, as you suspected, there is a ground somewhere, the computer detects the drain and shuts off the lights. Just a thought.

I will try leaving my lights on and letting the computer shut them off and see if I can replicate your problem. Give a few days. We're currently getting 24" of snow here in Albany and it's a little chilly outside! :)

Now that I think about it, if you are getting a glow, and twelve volts, something is killing the amps. Must be a ground. Check the plungers if you can find them and also check for continuity across the switches.

Good luck,
-John

Robert,
I tried to replicate your problem. I only have a DC volt meter, no amps. But, I tested my dome lights under normal "on" conditions. 12v across the bulb in all positions except "off". I left the door open and let the computer shut off the lights. 0 volts in all positions.

I stand by my theory that the computer is detecting a drain and shutting off the lights and your getting the faint glow due to a short eating up the amps.

You did mention that you were getting 12v with the switch in the off position. Maybe that switch your culpret? I checked mine and got 0 volts in off and 12 in the middle and on positions. The middle position comes on with the plungers and dims after you crank the car.

Good Luck,
-John

Let me know what happens.
