I have a 97 D1 with about 116K miles. Lately, there is a strange sound coming from the engine. It is not very loud, but sounds like a slight grinding/scraping noise. It is intermittent as well. The best description of the sound would be the sound a person makes when clearing their throat of mucus (sorry for the analogy). Other than that the car runs great. My thoughts are: a bad plug/wire, pully bearings, or lifter noise. Any thoughts. Bryan |

How about getting an auto-stethoscope (sp?) for around $15.00 at an auto parts store (or do the thing with a long screwdriver) to try to pinpoint the noise? The tensioner bearing for the sperpentine belt makes the kind of noise you describe. Thanks, Mike B. |

Well, that engine sound was one of the pulleys it seems. The car broke down and overheated with some coolant spillover. Power drained indicating an alternator failure, but why did the engine overheat? The belt seems to be in place still so I am not sure what actually happened. Temp. gauge never moved past the center position! It is going under the knife -- maybe time to retire the vehicle as I am a big believer of the cascading failure scenario -- once this breaks it forces the next item in line to fail, etc. |
