California has a new SMOG test that uses a Dynomometer. Has anyone had experiance with this? The only dynos that I've seen were single axle units.

Here in VA AWD vehicles are exempt from using the dyno. They just do an idle speed test. But if they REALLY wanted to test it they could always disable the front axle and lock the CDL (if so equipted)

I hope they are exempt here as well. Most of the Somg shops I've seen employ people who have problems telling one end of a wrench from the other. I don't want those bozos rounding off the bolts on my driveline.

Sorry. What is a Dynomometer?

Same thing as a Dynamometer :)

I recently took my Disco for its New Jersey inspection (safety and emissions). Instead of doing a dyno test, the state inspection place did a 2500 rpm idle test.

what does it measure on car?

number of dynamos in your vehicle, maybe

A dynomometer is in effect, a rolling road. It allows the drive wheels to travel @ a road speed while the vehicle is stationary. This allows a measure of pollutents @ that speed. They can be used to measure all sorts of things @ a particular speed. Of course, the problem is they are built for one axle to be in motion, and the other stationary. Not real conducive to AWD.

Look under the hood. I believe it states it is load test exempt unless a 4 wheel dynamometer is used.

Yeah, it says that but you should always make sure they know about it so you don't have to see your disco come crashing through the far wall of the service bay.

I've owned 4x4's almost since the dyno was required for emmissions. Usually on a 4x4 they just do a stationary test (that included my part time Jeep and Sub). However, I wouldn't let them do a dyno on a full time rig if they tried.

True wheel dynos are like a rolling road, however the do not measure pollutants...that is the job at the exhaust gas analyzer. The rear wheel dyno in this case just provides an accurate measurement of rpm, wheel speed under a load. Dyno's historically are used to measure HP and torque either at the rear wheels with a wheel dyno or at the flywheel for an engine dyno. I'm not sure that all these units that are installed at the emmission stations are fully capable dynos.

ema,

Where in Jersey are you? I had the same experience at DMV-Lodi. I was getting worried there for a second since they tested an exploder in front of me and they put it in the dyno. I waited to see what they are going to do but the guy appropriately told me to go to a different lane where there's no dyno.

Glenn,

I had my Disco tested at DMV-North Plainfield. I bought my car in Pennsylvania and had to get a NJ inspection sticker after getting my plates. When I pulled up, the DMV folks looked confused because they were not sure numbers for the '03 models were in the computer yet. They managed to get the Disco tested and sent me on my way. :)

ah, the pleasures of living in B.F.E. aka Oklahoma where there are no safety inspections or emission testing on anything with wheels.

stats:

3.46 million people
5.5 million head cattle

would make sense to me.

of course "we" are now in a huff about cock fighting being baned so the cattle are probably pretty safe.

besides, a human rear is unlikely to accomodate a 3" FlowMaster.
