my 89's steering pump seems to cavitate for a few minutes after the engine start-up in the morning; at the same time, the steering wheel seems to be a bit heavier than it used to be, and the feeling changes sometimes.

does it mean that the pump's going south on me?

Ron,

i'm too right-handed, using the left hand will break the rhythm.
btw, we need to hit SBD forest for a snow run!
i'll bring the yellow jeep to match your new and improved rangie :)
Jaime, it feels more or less like you describe.

My steering does the same thing when the fluid gets low. It seems to help if I fill the reservoir with my left hand. The Rover thinks it's somebody else!

Peter-
Try bleeding the box first, but yeah, it sounds like your pump is going. Meridian will sell you a new one for about $300. Don't buy a rebuilt! Meridian won't sell rebuilts anymore.

Good luck-

You can get them new for less than $300. Try discountrovers.com or you can try europarts-they list on their site for $229.00-But plan on calling Mohammed DAILY to complain about his SLOW delivery of parts!! (plan on at least 2 weeks) Also, www.gprparts.com lists new pumps for $285.00.

I like Meridian and they're right near you in San Diego.

pm I don't think the 'new and improved' rover will do any better in the snow than the old beater... I just have further to jump to find solid ground. Maybe we can get scrover to lead the way, he's got those skinny little tires that are bound to find their way quite easily in the snow.

sorry to hear about the pump, left hand/right hand won't fix this problem, just make you feel better.

Hey, don't be volunteering me for any suicide runs! I froze my ass off for 25 years before leaving the UK, ya think I miss it???? However, you were right about the skinny tires! LOL

Thanks for the pointers

Ron, i'm thinking of going to do a snow run at Big Bear on the weekend of 18-19. Depending on snow - if SBD mountains get more snow, it'll have to be the jeep.

Speaking of what makes you feel better - there are some things you can actually do on public. My kid's driving the Rangie to school now, and it looks like washing and vacuuming it gives him a warm and fuzzy feeling, despite spongy brakes, odd steering, and having to tun the aux. fans manually when the temp needle gets past half-way up :)

that's really funny, the other day i thought of ripping into the jeep's rear diff - or washing the mud off first? - and remembered that left hand comment.
