Hi there,

Seems like my front diff is waring out and needs replacment. I saw advertisement for Truetrac diffs at around 400$, which is only 90$ more then what a replacement open diff would cost me here.

Does anybody have experience with the truetrac in the front and an open diff in the rear? I'm mainly concerned about steep decents, where the added traction in front may have the back end overtaking the front end.

Thanks for the info,
and enjoy it!

Rob

Rob,

No real experience here with that kind of set up. But once I was doing some mantinance on my arb lockers and when I was putting every thing back together I reversed the switches. When i thought I was activating my rear I was actually activating my front. Very strange and a bit scary situation. I could not figure out what was wrong with my steering. I don't think a TT would have the same dramatic effect but I would go with a traction device in the rear before the front.

Someone may need to correct me if I am wrong but I thing the front and rear diffs are interchangable. If that is the case and you are on a budget and don't mind the extra labor maybe move the rear diff to the front and put a traction type diff in the rear.

The open diffs front and rear are interchangeable, but the truetrac is different front to rear so get the correct one.

I know of one rangie owner who has a TT up front and an open rear. He didn't mention any strange handling, but I would fit the TT in the back first.

You have nothing to fear in this set up. The true track in the front will make the steering slightly heavier, but nothing at all like an ARB or fully locking diff.

You will notice the slightly heavier steering for a week, then forget about it. The TT also reduces the tendency for the steering to wander as you drive at high speed, and that is good.

The TT is also much stronger than stock diff.

This is the set up in my wife's truck. It is really nice if you have a lift as far as handling, but it is kinda hard on the steering components.

I like the idea of better straight ahead stabillity. It's been windy here last week... Any idea's on how much bigger the chance is that I brake something with the TT in front. Reliabillity is a key issue for me because I use the disco mainly for traveling (Central Asia and Afrika).

Hey, thanks to all of you.

As far as breaking things, you should talk to Bill at Great Basin. He'd be happy to tell you all about it. I've been running TT's front and rear since blowing up my rear diff carrier last year in Utah. I love the setup. The TT's are invisible in the city, improve tracking, offer quite a bit of traction improvement, and are about 4 times as strong as your stock carriers. Whatever you do, don't replace a stock carrier with another stock carrier!

However, if you are limited on funds and want a stock carrier, I have two sitting in my garage with about 30K miles, after replacing with TTs Front and Rear. They are about to go on Ebay so if you need to face stock carrier replacements, Email me and maybe we can cut a deal.

Bruce:

Do you think the TrueTrac in the front contributed to your recent blown front CV joint? I would think that having a TT up front would definately put more stress on the front components (including half shafts, front drive shaft, and CV joints).

Thanks,
Mike B.

I was told that the TT in front actually would reduce the chance of blowing your front CV joint.

This is because the CV joint seldom blows by applying a lot of engine tork, but rather from the shock load occuring when a fast spinning wheel suddenly gets firm grip. With the TT there's less chance of a fast spinning wheel...

It's probably a bit of both
