Sorry to post this here, but you guys are very knowledged when it comes for 4x4 stuffs. I have three cars to choose from.

RAV4 vs. Honda CRV vs. Subaru Forester. These vehicles are competitively priced. Im leaning towards the Forester because of its 4wd system and safety. Anyone have any suggestions?? Thanks.

Kim, have you looked at the Freelander? If you haven't go take a look at them.

Get a Rover. Check out Lease returns. I bought a 3 year old Disco, dealer serviced, still even smelled new, with 12k miles for less than half the cost of a new one.

Of the three mentioned, I would look into the Forrester. No personal experience with either, but I've heard alot of good things about the 'Roos.

Of the three you listed, the Forrester is probably the best all around. The other two are basically tall cars. If you're interested, like Eric said, check out the Freelanders but it looks like you're looking for something more car-like and good fuel mileage. Neither of which you'll find on LRs.

I have a friend with a Forester and she loves it. Seems to be quite a nice ride, cheap, easy to maintain, etc. and most of all good gas mileage.

also look at the Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute. my wife drives an 4x4 V6 Escape and it is very similiar to a Freelander. certainly not as nice, yet, it is a pretty cool little vehicle. other than the basic maintenace, has needed nothing but gas. she usually is the one picking me up when the LRs are being towed or in the shop.

Kim,

I'll concur w/ the majority: between what's listed, go with the Roo, but consider the Freelander before you do....

I guess it depends what your "real" use will be. Alot of us here could destroy any of those three in a short jaunt to our favorite off road spot. If you are looking for something to run around town in, take some road trips and do some light off roading (rougher than usual gravel roads)...any of those are great. However, because of the All wheel drive system, safety, and all in all "bulletproofness" of the Subaru, it is hands down better than the others. If you wanna be a full on off road fanatic.....drop all 3 and get a Rover of some sort!! Hope this helps!

PS That word....bulletproofness....is my own, feel free to use it as you will!!

Definatly check out the Freelander. For the price range of the vehicles you are looking at you can probably pick up a demo car with a 7 or 8 k miles.

Okay Kim,

I just spent about 3 minutes performing online research. www.kbb.com lists an '03 Forrester for about 23K. I then went to Carmax.com and found over a dozen (pre-owned) Land Rovers that are priced under that amount just in the Raleigh area alone.

Do the homework. You can find a nice LR product in your price range.

Not to be the devils advocate, but if she buys a used Land Rover we will still have to consider maintaning it. A new car like the Forester is going to be cheaper to maintain (hopfully).
I would go check out the Freelander though...just for the heak of it.

i have heard only good things from the subuaru's...i love the wrx's and the other vehicles they have, have the same awd system...they seem to be rugged and durable....good luck and keep us updated...

If you really need 4wd then spend a little more than the top line forester and you can get a WRX!! For low optioned one you'll spend around $25K.

If you don't need 4WD then look at VW Jetta or Golf. I like the GTI 337 and pretty soon this will be available in any color not just silver and with more options. If a daily driver and lots of miles look at Tdi diesel versions-great cars.

If you look at the comparison between them all, the Forester is a small 4WD with a wagon's body...constant AWD, dual range transfer case with a CDL on the manual models. The others are either part time or full time AWD in a small 4wd body (with all the drawbacks of a higher centre of gravity etc).

Its off road capabilities are limited by its clearance and overhangs (bit like a standard DiscoII) but it will go a lot further and in greater safety off the bitumen than the other options available.

A petrol head cousin of mine owns a 2000my 2 litre manual Forester. He rechipped it with a WRX chip and did a little bit of work to the exhaust, and the motor produces the same output as a WRX...a significantly fast 4wd...

Of course, this being Discweb.org, I have to give a bit of encouragement for a LR product (Freelander). But fuel economy and inexpensive maintenance costs do not seem to be the rule in Rover Ownership, so let's move on.

My family owns a Subaru Legacy Outback. I've taken it on long (4hr+) drives, on the interstate, on dirt roads, through thick snow and it has performed very well. My friends have the WRX, Legacy 4door and the Forrester. The Forrester is a nice enough vehicle and performs just as well as the Outback but I find it to be quite detestable in the styling department.

The Honda CRV is a decent vehicle. My friend in Bethesda has the first generation and my cousin in West Virginia has the current model. Overall, decent vehicles designed to get you from point A to point B with as little fuss as possible. I'm not a big Honda fan but I think the parking brake lever in the current model is waaay cool. For off-road trail riding, the suspension and drive components leave a lot to be desired.

My friend in New Jersey has the current model RAV4. It's a funky little vehicle and he's taken it off-road (on some rather light trails, according to him) and it's performed alright. The recent snows posed no problems and he's very happy with it.

But you still need to understand your needs and purpose for the vehicle. For suburban and city driving, any of the three should suit your needs just fine. For snow driving, I'd say the Subaru then the Toyota are the best bets. And if fuel economy and inexpensive maintenance are the priority, the Honda is the better choice (my cousin in WV drives her CRV 40mins one-way to work).

And this being Discoweb, if serious off-road action is part of your plan, then you might as well skip all the above and find a used Disco1!
