ok ive gone through six lucas altenators in three weeks. ive freshened up the ground from frame to battery. what else could be wrong. im thinking about grounding the engine to the frame will this help. and i bet if i change the altenator again it will go up in smoke one more time. where to start and what to do. any remarks would be thankfull

There should be a large grounding strap from the engine to the frame. It's normally connected to the upper starter bolt, check it. that could be your problem..

check the serpentine belt for proper install, it can and will go on a couple of different ways and still fit! when i did my alt. i put the belt right back on and wow, the alt. wasen't acting right, i swore i installed the belt correctly, but didn't, so not to insult your intellegence, but check it out again! here's a pic to help,
Peter

sorry that i didnt tell you guys that it is for a 92 range rover. i did check the ground strap and it looks fine. im woundering if it could be the little black box on the back of the altenator. it started fine this morning every thing seemed ok for o couple of minutes, i mean in respects to rpm gauge. then the usual fibulation to a spike then dead.

Good chance that your battery is defective.
