I've been dealing with a noise (grind) from the PS when the engine is at or near idle and while turning the wheel (like when turning into or out of a space). This doesn't happen all the time so the dealer looks at me like I'm nuts. I don't really mind it but my truck will soon be out of warrantee and if the PS pump is failing I want to be sure it gets fixed before I'm SOL.

I didn't think too much about it until while I was at the dealer yesterday I overheard someone else with the same complaint. And I noticed someone posted with the same problem on another board. I'm just wondering if this is another one of those non-issues that IS an issue like the leaking radiators. Has anyone else with a D2 experience this?

Yeah my 2000 D2 has been doing it since I got it. I also asked the dealership, they it was the steering box. They changed that and it still made the noise and they said to me they can't find it. Ive got 35k on the rig and now I just don't pay attention or give a shit about the noise, but I told the dealership that if something happens down the road they will replace whatever happens for free. And they actually said ok!!! Thank you come again. My dealership is a good one.

My wife's D2 does something similar. When you back out, cut the wheels, then straighten back out, it makes a kind of rubbing/grinding/groaning type noise. It sounds like it is coming right up the steering shaft. We plan to take it in and have the dealer look at it so maybe they will have an answer.

Yeah it seems like a lot of D2 owners are hearing this noise so it could be a faulty something. Sometimes I go undernearth and put some petrol gel on the steering rods and that stopper thing on the the axle (not sure what its called, i think bump stop) and it goes away for 2 weeks or so but comes back again.

The same thing started with my D2 a couple of weeks ago. I thought it might have something to do with the cold weather at first but it did it above 50F the other day so . . .

If one of you guys discover what the problem is later please follow up on this thread.

I have a sound from my front left when I cut the wheel hard to get in or out of a parking space...sounds alot like when I used to put baseball cards on the spokes of my bike. Only started when I put the 265/75-16 MTs on....Kinda wondering if this is what you are hearing too?

Rans... that sounds like you're tire rubbing on the radius arm. The sound is more of a grinding sound as I turn quickly, generally when I turn to the right but not at full lock. Some one else said this is normal on the Discos but I only started to hear it recently.

Some D2s start it later others from the beginning. Mine started at about 1500 miles. By the way does anyones steering wheel actually vibrate slighty when it does it??

I have a 99D1 that does this. It sounds like "onk" or like a "R" rolling grunt or maybe even a fart. This happens usually while pulling in/out of a parking place. Many have stated that it needed some PS fluid but it checks out fine. The dealer cannot recreate the problem as usual. We should all carry camcorders and super sensitive microphones with us to record problems for the dealers.

I'll second Al's diagnosis of Rans' noise. Similar thing happened when I installed larger MT's on a leaf sprung vehicle. Tire lugs/ridges snagged on leaf at full turn. Very similar sound. Of course disco's don't have leaf springs, but the sound is still most likely the tires rubing on something at full turn and the radius arm is a likely candidate.

I guess the question is: Does the steering make the noise WHILE turning the steering wheel? Does this happen while moving or sitting still?

While turning the steering wheel. Happens while vehicle is stationary (I think) but generally I'm rolling into our out of a space at low idle or turning into my driveway while the engine is at idle but vehicle is rolling.

Rans, I should have mentioned that if it is your tire hitting the radius arm it's an easy fix in your case. And easy to diagnose. Check for a spot on the radius arm just aft of the front tires that's missing some paint off the black metal. I get it more on the driver side for some reason but you should check both sides. If that's what's causing it it's just a matter of adjusting the steering stops.

If the noise occurs while sitting still but while turning the steering wheel, I would exclude the wheel rubbing. mine usually happens when its cold.
