I just read a previous posting on this same topic. Im just curious how many of you are in your teens and under 25. Do you own your own discos?

Im 22, just bought a 97 discovery on my own. For the longest time I thought that those cars cost a fortune, but my Disco was actually cheaper then the F-150 I was going to buy. The one thing I hate about my car is that everyone thinks I spent upwards of $30k for it..... or think that my mom and dad bought it for me. It's annoying. In actuality I worked my ass off the past 3 years starting my own company and decided to buy myself something nice. Anyone else have a similar experience?

I love the look of shock on peoples faces when I tell them I got my car for $12k... Especially when I told my friend right after he spent 17k on a honda civic piece of Crap.
lol

I get that too, but I don't let it bother me :)

I'm 24 and I recently bought a '98 with everything but rear air and jumpseats. Nothing beats turning up the leather heated seats, opening both sunroofs, polishing the wooden dash, and selecting a CD from the changer while knowing that I only paid 9 grand. Of course I recently took it over 100K on the clock, and I have to keep at the maintenance to keep it running (smoothly).

It's not really a choice for a person without much cash who's not willing to turn a wrench. I can't afford to pay somebody to fix a Rover, hell I can hardly afford the parts! I think it's safe to say that although picking one up cheap is possible, the cost of ownership for your average Joe can be high.

Now just don't go around telling outsiders how cheap you can pick one up... us rich Yuppies get all the hot chicks :)

Robert, props on actually working for what you have, that's a rare thing these days!

Best part of owning a rig Like a disco or a land cruiser is that it's a huge learning experience...

I'm 28 and while I don't own a disco I know what you mean about the "looks"...while in college I had a mildly built FJ40...everyone assumed that mom and pops laid down the cash for it....until the day they saw me rebuilding the front diff in the parking lot in front of my dorm....in Feb!

I'm 27, but broke as hell. I bought it one year ago, still have 3 years left on the payments. Put a bunch down and have about $6,000 left to pay BoA.
Love the vehicle though. Tire shop called, 245/75's just got in. Cant wait to get them put on. :-)

I'll join in.
I'm 23 and bought my 97 disco with 50k on the clock for 12k. It's actually my second car right now. A year and a half ago I bought a BMW E36 325i. It's a 92 but it looks like a 98. Absolutely mint. My friends all joke about my yuppy stylings, but hey I spent 24k to get a bimmer and a landy. They spent 24k and got junk. Of course I pay twice the insurance and expenses, but I'm a car fanatic and it's worth it. Plus in my opinion those two cars are a perfect combo. I put all the road miles on the fun bimmer and some spirited outings as well. The rover is reserved pretty much for the dirt. Of course, I've kept the bimmer stock, but the Landy has gotten 5k in upgrades since I got it. I enjoy the fact that I bought my cars for myself and that I got good deals, but people can think what they like. In my case, a lot more people think I'm just loaded rather than spoiled.

Ha. Speaking of BMW's and cost. Have any of you guys seen the Jap Commercial (Toyota or Mitsubishi?) I wasn't paying attention till they show a BMW owner (young kid) bought a BMW and while all his buddies were at a light asking him if he was going to a party, he's like no, got to work. Zoom out and show a pizza delivery sign on top of the 300 Series BMW.

He then shows up at the party and there is a small uncomfortable pause as he's deliverying pizza to the party.

My take on this is that way to many people are settling for less. When they (other party kid) are older all they will have is a Jap car. Meanwhile the working kid knows the value of good things even though he has to work to earn it. I give more props to this kid than to all the others. It kinda reminds me of me. I too have worked hard and have had to put other things secondary to working.

Good things take time and cost sweat.

I bought my Disco at 23 after I got off my first ship. (I sail on cargo ships as third mate). The Disco was priced mid level for SUVs. Everyone thought I spent a fortune.

Alex it was a dodge commercial for the dodge SXT or something like that. It is a stupid commercial from the fact that a nice BMW is not in any class that the dodge is...I would rather be the pizza delivery man, then the people driving those dodges

I bought my 1992 Disco in 1999 at the age of 21, and still have it...

I traded in my 1995 Honda Accord, and do not regret one bit...

That is the beauty of the truck, even if you cut her up, smack her in mud, and dent the hell out of it, it is still a "luxury" truck, turns heads, and lets you pick up chicks!!!

LOL - Great to heave youa ll have similar experiences. I knew Discos could be troublesome, but I love working on cars so it fits me prefectly. The Girls down at school love it. I think it's the one car which draws attention. So I got my disco last year and I had yet to "break it in" with a lady! LOL, that all changed 2 weeks ago. :-) I just rememeber her saying in my ear somthing like "I love seeing you drive this thing". It was kinda of a turnoff actually. I think she's only into me cause I MUST be very wealthy. LOL. Little does she know that Im practically scrapping for food and beer in dumpsters! ;-) Ignorance is Bliss I guess.

Hey-

I am 23 and got a 1999 BMW 3-er about a year ago-Of course I got tons of flack for owning it because people assume it is so expensive. However- I am doing all the research I can on Disco's because I got a boat and need something to tow it. Unfortunately, the BMW will have to go. Anything I should look for in a 99 or newer Disco II?

Do a compression check on it first. Check the brake system, oil leaks, hose seapage, transmission fluid, etc....

I'm 23 and I bought my 98 LSE when I was 21.

As a recent graduate of Cornell University my Disco didn't really stick out in the sea of sorority girls driving stripped down Discos and frat boys in their Rangies. Mine however was always the only one that had mud on it. I also think that I was one of the few owners on campus that actually knew what the handle in front of the shift lever was for.
If anyone out there knows the Cornell campus I took on a Jeep driver for a drive up Libe slope in the middle of a snow filled night. (Neither of us made the top but the Disco made it twice as far as the Jeep.)

I hope my young age doesn’t lose me any credibility on my diff lock site that gets a bunch of hits every week:

http://www.people.cornell.edu/pages/efe4/images/rover/difflock/discodifflock.htm

I did rebuild my first engine when I was in 7th grade and bought my first car before I had my driver’s license.

I love the Disco, I just wish my license plates read “Not Dads” as all my car purchases have been made with cash and without any parental help.

Im 24 and only got mine about 3 months ago. Chicks actually dig it. Theres not many cars you can take a girl out to her own private bit of beach in, then take her to dinner and get valet parked at the restaurant!!
Like everyone else, it wasnt that expensive and it has lots of stuff on it for its price.
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that disco people are often Beemer people aswell? I love em. Fair to play to you guys who've got both.

I'm 21 and i've got a 95 disco that I got in 98. I attend UNC, and there's a shitload of sorority discos and fratty ranges all over the place down here like Evan was saying were at Cornell. Not many that see much more than pavement. Mine sees alot of pavement nowadays as well, but I try to go out riding if I get the chance.

Joel - look for a warranty. that's about the best thing have, and then anything that looks funny you can just get the dealer to fix. And they all leak oil (in my experience). Just my .02 cents.

Im at OSU and there a couple frat dicks down here that drive them. I'll sound like a hypocrite here, but I honestly bet most are bought by mom and dad.

I've been a Jeep guy since I was 16, and I used to do a ton of offroading. I havent yet in my Disco. I think Id be too nervous. So for now all mine sees is the pavement and the occasional gravel parking lot. Anyone ever roll their disco or thrash it when off roading?

Its ok Robert, they only *look* top heavy. You can actually lean a helluva long way. And as for climbs and descents....suck it and see. Youll be pleasantly surprised.
On thrashing it, I did strip my sprag gear in the ZF while duning. But you get that.

I got my '89 Range Rover when I turned 16, I am 17, almost 18 now. My parents paid for it initially, but through different jobs I have paid them back. I have also paid for the majority of my mods myself. It's really funny when I tell girls I drive a Rangie, because they don't expect a muddy Rover pulling up.

Well this is fast turning into an "I'm young and bought my rover by myself" thread. I have the upmost respect for you guys but I'm not to proud to admit that my dad gave me mine. I have since paid for all the modifications and am responsible for it when it breaks but didn't have to front the initial purchase. I have a great deal of respect for my truck and find most of the "spoiled" comments to be pretty dumb as they are generally coming from people who are driving much more expensive cars that their parents paid for, once again the curse of having "Land Rover" writen across the hood. I really love my Rover though there is something to be said for having what many people view as the "coolest" car at school, especially when you consider the fact that it is no where NEAR being the most expensive. Sparkly clean Mercedes, BMWs, Audis, and Corvettes might look cool but they look just like every other one out there, muddy, modified rovers are few and far between (especially) here.

Judging from what a few of you have said, I'm glad I have been dating my girlfriend since before I got the Rover. Oh yeah Will, you might want to try and incorporate some naked mud wresling into the whole "muddy rangie" experience.

Wait. I am confused? Why would this thread be taken down!!!

This conversation isnt that bad. Muddy Rovers, Naked Mud Wrestling in the rover, getting used by cheap girls because of our rovers. The life of college aged kids with discos can be trouble. It's a nice break from the monotonous of tech discussions. hummm.. ok, to brign this back to a Tech type discussion: How would I go about modifying my disco so I can hold 2 kegs and a couple sorrority girls? :-) Do I need bigger tires?

Quite frankly, I don't give a crap whether you bought the Disco yourself or your parents gave it to you. If someone has a problem with the source of your Landy, screw them - that's their problem. You don't owe them an explanation or any damn thing.

What I'd rather see is a passion for the Landy, not who paid for your title.

It helps when cops pull you over and they think its the parents. When I first got mine I took it out behind my work with some friends. Cops were waiting for me when I came out. First thing they said "what is this a landrover Commercial you think your parents will like you doing this." they let me off. Guess they think with it being dirty the parents will get mad. NO, they don't care its mine

well i'm 17...got my rover when i was 16...
and i will say its my favorite truck...i fell in love with them ever since my 'rents got their '97...great truck and after watching some camel trophy stuff...i fell in love again...
And i'm with jay on the whole passion deal...i love my rover and everything about it...it has its quirks but they are great...although i don't own mine now...i would love to buy it off my parents when i can...and i will never get rid of this truck...

My favorite thing to do is after you hit the trails and you are drivin' home... i love passin' soccer moms/dads who drive the D2's with the 18's on 'em....and they can't believe you've got BFG and lights and MUD!! on the rover....LOL
the D2's with 18's are nice cars...not tryin' to bash @ all...i can personally attest to this cuz my mom traded our '97 in on an '00 cuz they were so much safer....i ended up with a '95...which i really am excited about because i wanted it to be as jeep/truck like as possible....no wood....some steel wheels...i like the fact its not quick..and its a beast....my friend's have tahoe's and jeeps and everything else and i love wheelin' with 'em...pullin' them out or otherwise...

Anyway, peace...and to anyone involved with SOLAROS...hope to see you soon cuz i'm joinin' this year....

Just to add my 2 cents, I am 30, I have a disco II (99) and a Beemer 325 (01). as someone mentioned, they are the perfect combination. I am a beginner at offroading, but it is quite nice to have the reliability of the Disco. Driving the Beemer makes you want to go fast...but driving the disco makes you just go slow for the ride! a feeling hard to explain!! even mom back in Mexico sees me as a little boy playing with a toy!

'Scus me for sittin in but this thread isn't really limited by age. I'm 40 and own both my 525 and my '74 2 door Range Rover with no help from the parents. And as for funny looks people get twice as confused seeing a muddy, stripped down, Rangie with only 2 doors - when it's running that is. Oh yeah and my new fiance wants it fixed worse than I do because she wants to christen it (if you get my meaning). Some things are ageless.
Enjoy what you have and ignore the non-believers.

I agree with Jay here.
People need to stop worrying about how some people got their cars. Its ridiculous. Think about it. You may knock Carter for getting given a truck (to the point where he doesnt like admitting to it) but if you were well-off and had kids of driving age, are people honestly saying they would tell them "sorry, we know we have pots of the stuff (money) but youre just going to have to save up yourself and in the meantime we'll give you lifts everywhere." Hell no! If I had the folding to spare, I'd damn well buy my kid a car too. People should stop being so high and mighty.

hey just becuase us frat boys go to college and show up in our brand new range rovers and leave college with 0 debt and get an awesome sham job working for our dad or anyone of our frat buddies dads. doesn't mean we dont share the same passion for Land Rovers. You gotta look at the investment from your parents point of view. Drivin a 65000 dollar SUV on campus ussually means you'll get the hot babes. The trick is to tell them they can have it. See, most of our wifes really would not like to have the Rover for them selfs but they might tell us they would just to get us, so say, "So what, take it I just want out!"
That would piss her off and we would end up with the Rover anyway!!

Well I'm 27 and I got my rover and twins are always trying to hit on me. They are like did you parents get you that? I'm like no.. I paid tons of money for it so I'm not snobby. I'm getting married later this year so I'm getting a good pre-nup so that my soon-to-be-bride won't take my Rover.

Hows that for a summary.

i just bought my 1996 disco a year ago, for pretty damn cheap! i am only 21 and i get the worst looks from older people. most of the time i too get shit from people who think i spent upwards to 40k on my disco. (plus i added all essential off-road appearence junk, like roof rack, mad fogs, brush bar front and rear, etc. my friend just went out and bought a 2001 accord and i tool on him all the time because who want a gay accord when you can have a rover for less? i guess just someone who hates buying gas...

Funny, here in LA I mostly see chicks in Disco's... not that thats a bad thing. Some of my closest friends are chicks.

I just wanted to add a little something to the "parents buying their kids cars conversation". Just because a parent buys their kids cars doesnt mean that they are rich little brats driving around in Disco's. My family is middle class and doesnt make 500,000+ a year. My parents rewarded me with a 99 Disco-2 because of how hard I work with school. I've recently got a job and are buying mods for my Disco with the money that I've earned. Just because my parents bought me a Discovery doesn't mean we're rich or I'm spoiled. (But it was a nice gift) I've worked hard during school and kept a 97 overall average and a 4.0. Even though i didnt pay the initial payment i do have to pay for gas, as well as insurance.

kinda related to the "I'm a rich yuppy" scrawled across the disco's hood...
not sure about you guys but whenever I take my disco on trails, ppl tend to either treat me with open hostility (ie some jeep bastard tailgating me while we were both going at 60kph on a dirt road when some ppl are out for the view when they're wheeling) or they are just totally rude (ie some last gen 4runner refusing to budge as I was making a turn from a deadend on a trail and just sat there watching me make my 50 point turn)
it's a stock 96 D1 and still I get a feeling that ppl are out to get you just to boost their own ego.
it's amazing how different it is when I used to take my 00 stock explorer (returned after the lease) and people actually wave at me and slow down as they see me taking pictures on the side of the road!

I took my Disco on a trail once and passed some Jeepers who had stopped for a picnic (of sorts). They pretty much gave us an awe-filled stare as we lumbered past them.

I don't think necessarily they were impressed off their feet, but they had enough sense to rocognize a fellow wheeler, let alone one who'd be willing to take a Land Rover off pavement.

I guess experiences may vary, and I'm sure I'll get hit with the reverse snobbery from others someday.

I'm a 24 year old female with a Land Rover. It's not only girls who chase after boys who drive Land Rovers ...
I don't think I could count the number of times I heard my last two boyfriends, as well as all my guy friends say "Can we take your car? Can I drive?"

I'm 24 and just got my Disco I have wanted one for a while, but then finally came across a deal I couldn't pass up. With my QX4's lease ending I wanted anothe truck that I could have fun with. Talk about dirty looks, I currently own three cars, including the Disco and have owned at least 2 cars, along with a few motorcycles here and there, since I was 22 years old. Which I'll admit only happend becauseI got lucky I landed a good job that allows me to "waste" my money on cars. After I got my "Real" job I figured why not buy the things I want now while I am young. One of the first times I met my girlfriend's father he actually took me aside and asked if I was a drug dealer.
