I am new to the Disco Web and looking to purchase my first Disco. It will be used mostly as a second truck and for offroad.

I know the general rule is to always buy as new as you can afford.... but what years should I look at and what should I stay away from? I am hoping to spend about no more then 15,000.

What motor and options are best and most important for offroad.

Any other tip or hints will be appreciated.

Thanks for your help.

Which series Disco are you more interested in? Series I Discos are shorter and up to 1998/99. Series II Discos have a longer ass, more electronics and slightly wider bodies. Series II Discos are generally regarded as more road friendly than D1s while D1s have an edge in the off-road department becuase they're not as long as the D2s.

A Disco II IMHO is more reliable than the Series 1. Just read about all the items people are having problems with and make your own choice. I will tell you that either Series are great off road machines, it is just how much upkeep you want. Good luck picking your Best 4x4xfar!

I own both a 1996 Discovery SE and a 1999 Discovery Series II. If it isn't your primary vehicle, I would opt for a 1999 Series I with low miles if possible. These trucks do have their problems, but the Series I are easier to work on, have less electronic gizmos to screw up, etc. My wife drives the DII and I drive the beat up old D1. I travel about 4000 miles a month, so my maintanence schedule is definitely different than most people. (4 years worth of work for every year I drive it) For what is it is worth. I've got 132,000 miles on my rig and it is still running well(knock wood). Most expensive problems were from abuse on my part. Good luck in your decision.. Later. Robert

Thanks for all the help so far. What about the electronics. I have had a few people tell me to stay away from the pre bosch electronic vehicles. Is this true?

1996-1999 D1 if you're using this as an off road vehicle if only for the field repairable axles on the D1. I have a D2 and they're nice but as mentioned they have a big ass end and the axles aren't as nice on the D2. As for electronics they are about the same. The D2 has ETC but it doesn't use any thing that the D1 doesn't already have. It's just ABS in reverse.
