I'm interested in purchasing a few items from the UK. I've noticed that the prices are very good even after doing the conversion to USD. Where's the catch? Is it the shipping? I'd hate to buy a brush bar for for cheap and then pay $1000 for shipping or something like that. I also keep seeing "VAT". What does this mean? Do most companies take care of the shipping or would it be up to me?
Thanks all.

VAT= Value Added Tax. It's basically a nationwide sales tax in the UK.... Buying in the US, you're exempt.

Shipping isn't bad on some items, it'll kill you on others. It wouldn't be as bad as $1000 for a brushbar, but it may really kill your savings.

Most of the companies can arrange shipping, but how they ship may not necessarily be the cheapest way to get it to you.

Where things go south is if you have a problem: it's much harder shipping something back and getting it replaced if there's a problem.

If you check a good smaller place like The Thatched Roof Garage, Ltd, you'll usually find that they have done the legwork for you... it's ready to ship to you from here, you're dealing with someone in the US, you don't have near as much hassles.

IMHO, FWIW.....

VAT is a tax. In Germany it is like 16% I believe. Not sure what it is in the UK, but I'd imagine it's up there.

As for shipping prices, it depends if you want a container, roll-on/roll-off, expedited, or not. I believe I paid about $800 to ship from Germany to Baltimore.

My G-Wagen. As roll-on/roll-off, and it did take several weeks.

That seems like a great price, roll-on/roll-off must be the cheapest. It's that much to go L.A. to Boston! We have 1 G-Wagen in our area that I see driving around town. It's absolutely mint and always perfectly shined up. Some day I want to introduce myself, the owner might enjoy knowing that SOMEONE knows what it is and what it's capable of. I am sure the guy has lost track of how many times it's been mistaken for a Jeep. This is Dodge Ram/Subaru country. Heck, people call my big ol' RR a Jeep all the time. I never correct them, just let it slide and smile.

Yes it is the cheapest, but you run the greatest risk of having the truck damaged (i had light guards stolen, few little dents and scratches).

I get mistaken for an Isuzu trooper ALLL the time... I just wonder how they can miss the big benz symbol on the spare wheel... :)

Also, depending on what port you are coming through and how the inspectors are feeling that day, you may end up paying customs tarifs on those parts.
