I decided to repost a question I had over the holidays. I'm still searching for the answer!
I'm trying to get rid of the alternator whine when I replaced just the HU in my 2000 Disco II. The stock amp and speakers are still in place for now. I've tried different grounds for the HU, a ground isolator inline for the RCA low level outputs, and have also tried using the speaker level outputs.

I replaced my stock HU with an Alpine MP3 player over the holidays. I used the Volkswagen harness for the eay connection. I'm using the RCA low level connections from the new HU to the stock harness/amp by soldering some RCA plugs to the stock wiring (I've also tried the speaker level)

I'm using the stock harness for the constant and acc. power wires and I'm grounding seperately to the car.

From my previous post, it sounds like this is a common problem with an easy answer...but what is it?

its the factory amp that is causing your whine... LR phase their low power Hu with the amp so when you add something aftermarket the map will pick up any stray noise... my 0.02 is to rip out the factory amp. you can just power the system with the new Hu if it throws enough amps.. you will just have to rewire the amp for the subs in the back... if that doesn't work, the cheapas factory speaker wires need to be replaced with shielded ones... some people have luck with just adding inline ground isolators.. but some have also had to replace all speaker wires and amps...

I thought about doing just that...bypassing the factory amp and just using the amp in the new HU. The only issue I have is that I thought that the crossovers are built into the factory amp. So if I bypass it, there is no crossover for the component speakers. This is the way it is in the BMW H/K systems.

I'm hoping that I'm wrong and that the crossovers are after the factory amp and what you are suggesting would work?
