Hi There-
I was wondering if anyone knew of less expensive options for installing a new catalytic converter in my 98' Discovery LSE. The dealership wants to charge me like $1200.

I found an online Land Rover parts site that will charge me $490 and I can install it myself.

Any other options or is this the best one? What about used converters? Thanks...

Hey Matt, before you shell out the money, check to see if your truck qualifies: http://www.discoweb.org/warranty.htm

as long as you are under 80k miles and the cats aren't damaged from offroading, you should be good to go.

if not, there are no aftermarket direct bolt ins that I know of. Nathan at discountrovers.com can get them for $495 for the y-pipe, you can cut and weld in replacements from summit racing, or you can scour junk yards.

ha ha ha ha, too funny, I myself have replace my catalytic converter in my 98' Discovery LSE as well. The dealer in MA wanted $1500.00 to fix it. That's just wrong. I haven't fixed it yet, but I might just go to one of the chains and get it done. I hear it's around $300/$400.

Does yours make a ticking noise? Did you think it came from under the hood?

Yeah it makes a ticking sound...I talked to the dealership and they said if it failed the emissions test, then they will change it out for free. Unfortunately, I just had my emissions checked last year and it passed. I might go there and ask them to fail me. If not, then I'll pick up one for like $500...that's the cheapest I've seen.

Here's the link if you're interested.

Meineke or Midas Muffler Shops, you should have them quote you before you buy. I hear they are cheaper and life time guarantee...
