I have a '97 D1 (90K mi) and recently removed the Stepper Motor (Idle Air Bypass Valve) and cleaned it. This included scrubbing the shaft with a brush and spraying brake cleaner into the shaft base and draining out the resulting black-colored fluid. After reinstallation and engine restart, there was a slight hesitation, then it idled just fine. Then, as I was backing out of the driveway (and at stoplights), the idle would drop to 500 RPM, then slowly climb back to 750 (foot still on brake pedal). Upon parking, the idle was then at 800-900 RPM. Also seems that the idle does not decelerate properly upon slowing down (although this could be my imagination). Did I mess up my Stepper Motor? If I have to replace it, which is OK for my peace of mind, about how much would this part cost? |

No, You just have to have the base idle adjusted. ECU was adjusting for dirty stepper. probably will get better on its own. Joe |

i have a 96 disco and it was sputtering and running terrible at about 1500-2000 rpm. i did what you did with my stepper and had the same problem, by morning i guess all the solvent evaporated from inside the stepper and it runs and idles like a new engine now. I noticed that the valve cover vents upstream of the stepper and believe over time causes it to get gummed up. |
