I need to find a new parka to wear in the cold Indiana winter. I pretty much only have bought patagonia products, but I want to branch out and try something new. Anyone have an suggestions. I am talking under like $200 (I am a poor valet, who can't afford to pay more then that). Thanks! Chris |

Any of the Mountain Hardwear jackets are fantastic. Are you talking gore-tex or fleece? |

Patagonia, Sierra Designs, Mountain Hardwear, LL Bean are all pretty good. If you want to find a good deal on a parka, check Sierra Trading Post or REI Outlet. http://www.sierratradingpost.com/ http://www.rei.com/outlet/index.html -ema |

I second that. Sierra Trading Post had my MHW parka in there around Xmas time for HALF of what I paid. It's the Mithril XCR...HIGHLY recommended and defintely at that price! |

peep www.sierratradingpost.com or www.rei-outlet.com you will be able to find high end brands like MNT Hardware Marmot (my favorite and who's parka i own) sierra designs patagonia TNF ArxTyrex and a bunch of others that are all typically decent quality. the first site usually has the best selection, be alert of if your size is avalible... rd |

sorry I am not sure if i clearfied this, it is a shell not a parka i need, i have a million different pairs of fleece, I need a new shell, because mine doesn't fit anymore. I am very formiliar with brands, but everyone I know either has patagonia or north face. Are those brands of similar quality, just never had experence with them. |

Mountain Hardwear is better than North Face (these days....TNF used to be good...they're going down in quality), patagonia is still a great brand, ecologically conscious, but not cheap. If you can find a MHW shell or even the Marmot (lower price) they are great. Having worked at an Outdoor Gear store and dealt with sales reps from all the brands, I can honestly tell you those two are fantastic products. Great customer service, and they LAST! My personal suggestion: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/xq/asp/base_no.42628/str_base_no.24271,41204,42014,42080,42081,42087,42213,42225,42226,42270,42411,42417,42422,42473,42525,42600,42605,42621,42624,42628,/header_title./page_name.prod_list_display.asp/search_type.L2%7E208/size1./size2./gender.0/ShowImages.yes/sq.0/cont.1/sqlSearchStr./intPgNo.1/special_type./qx/product.asp I have this jacket (in a men's small) and all the guys in my store wanted it...of course, I got it at a good price b/c of the size. STP has a good deal on it, provided you could wear the sizes they have offered. It's got a lot of features, warm enough for any conditions, but also 30% more breathable than regular Gore-Tex. |

Does anyone see the irony of how, in (if you listen to some folk) a society that "supposedly" still suffers from racism of some sort, a person of anglo-saxon descent goes out to buy a jacket with a label which is an anagram of For Us By Us, alledgedly designed by (and for) the afro- american community, cause they look cool. (ok, maybe theyre functional aswell - I dunno) Imitation is the highest form of flattery huh.... (not pointed at anyone in any way, just the mindless ramblings of an outsider, making an observation an aspect of US society) Damn its hard to stay to PC and still make a point. |

Marmot is niche oriented. If you buy their ice climbing jacket you will be unhappy with it unless you use it to ice climb. Mountain Harwear is more broadly advertised and available therefore their stuff is generally targetted to a broader market. You will be more comfortable in MHW ice climbing jacket than you would be with a comparable Marmot if you buy it just walk around in the cold. The vast majority of people who buy 3 layer Goretex don't need it and would be infinitely more comfortable in 2 layer. Since 3-layer is more "extreme," they needlessly shell out more money. If you don't know about Marmot, you probably don't need Marmot. |

ArxTyrex I think I spent 300 Canadian. I have worn the jacket day after day 15 hours+ of every type of precipitation here in WA. The jacket is totally waterproof (zippers, etc) and you cant even tell you have it on. I give it Tec Wash every once in a while and it comes out looking brand new. I need to buy another for reserve. Good luck. |

cabela's I have alot of there stuff includding 2 of there Iditerod suits and the quality is awsome and the lifetime warrenty is hard to beat. I called to order a new gortex lined ambush cloth rain suit this year after wearing holes in mine after 13years of use and they insisted I send back my original for warrenty. they replaced it free of charge even though I never asked ,I just mentioned that the last one gave me more then a decade of servise and needed a new one. they have my outerwear business for life! |

Definately shop Sierra Trading post. I have got numerous good buys from them. As far as TNF, there stuff used to be awsome, but now it's not so hot. They were about to go bankrupt, and Vanity Fair bought them and that's when TNF became trendy and cheaper. I have some of there older stuff and it is indestructable. Will |

Marmot = Maximog But I have to agre with On Belay that their stuff is pointed to people who use it. I have a climbing jacket and it's meant to be worn all day with a pack, so the pockets are higher and you look like a dork if you try to put your hands in your pockets at the local mall. The things taken a beating and I wouldn't want to wear anything else when I'm climbing/hiking in bad weather. You don't need a Maximog to drive to Home Depot, but damn you'd look cool doing it. But around town, I wear a G-Sting and don't worry about rain. And please stop mis-spelling Arc'teryx! pwc |

I have a Marmot backpack its been very nice. It will hold a case of beer perfect. The Mountain Hardwear FTX parka has the pockets built around the backpack. I dont know about Marmot but Hardwear replaced my old FTX park with a brand new one no questions asked about 2 months ago. |
