My service engine light has come on, apparently it is timer based and is a reminder to come in for an emmissions related service. It's separate from the check engine light that indicates some sort of fault.

Is there a way to reset the light?

Look in the tech section for your answer.

That actually doesn't sound very good... Is it the RED light or AMBER light? Emmissions put out codes around 60-80k miles (huge range in milage but every Disco varies) and only triggers the Check Engine light. if the RED service light is on you might have deeper problems than emmissions.

Read your codes with an OBD II code reader. If you don't have one, get them checked at any Autozone for free. The codes will tell you for sure what's going on (at least narrow it down).

other way around Corey. at least, if it is a DI. The red light is the Service Engine light (emissions) and the orange/amber light is the Check Engine light (check codes). as Doug said, check tech section (think under the FAQ).

the RED Service Engine Light is set to go off every 52,500 miles. it's an emmissions reminder.
the directions i did are for a 96, if it's a 95, the box is under the passenger seat.

The interesting thing is, it's the light that should be amber, but it is read...

The service engine light is indicated as amber in the owners, manual, mine is red...

In the manual it states:
Check Engine - (should be amber) indicates an engine operation or emmisions problem

Service Engine - (should be amber, but mine is red) - illuminates at approximately 50k miles to remind you to get an emmissions related service, mine had over 80k when it turned on.

maybe it's a european thing then? from looking at Corey (Discobro)'s profile, looks like he has european plates, so maybe that is correct for across the pond. but here (NAS), it is check engine/amber, service engine/red. interesting.

so what exactly is the emissions service? Manual for a DII states nothing about it in the regular service schedule listing. my dealer told this would be about $300 - for what I asked? he really wasn't too descriptive. What happens if I don't do the service and just let the light go?

they check you emission components and reset the light.

so if you simply reset the light and it doesn't come back on isn't it ok?

from the workshop manual:
"The emmission maintenance reminder is designed to activate at 52,500 and 105,000 miles respectively and will illuminate a 'Service Engine' red warning light in instrument binnacle"

reset it and wait for it come come back on at the next interval.
if something were wrong you will usually get the 'Check Engine' light.

Mine just went "on" this weekend. It was red and therefore scared the hell out of me and my wallet. I took it in to the dealership and they told me that "nothing was wrong, its just a reminder to service the engine". They reset the light and i was on my way with $0.00 spent.

Autozone no longer checks for free (at least in California).

Just and FYI.

The dealership charged me $27.00 just to shut it off! I wanted to punch him out when he smiled about it.

does anyone know how to reset the service engine light for a DII?
I believe the tech section talks only for a DI.

av - undo the battery for 5 secs.

Or you can put blackout paint on the letters SERVICE and SO, so that

SERVICE ENGINE SOON

reads

ENGINE ON
:)

i believe the service engine light on the DII's means there is something wrong with the truck. have the codes read and find out what the deal is.

The DII has no emmission reminder. One the DI the reminder is a brown box. You can just throw the box away and no adverse effects will happen. The light will still go thru the prove out period but will never light again.

Kind of true Oliver. I have a 95 D1 and disconnected mine, everything was fine, then I got a check engine light. The onboard OBD reader wouldn't show a code until I plugged the brown box back in. So don't throw the thing away.
