97 disco. I took my belt off and forgot how to put it back on. i was baffled by the routing...after awile i started thinking that i must have stretched the belt cause it was WAY to long to go back on.

anyway...I found a way to put it on but it just didn't seem right. didn't seem to have enough tension and looked real funny.

i drove it anyway...i should have taken a picture. i think my routing was turning my ps pump, and my water pump backwards. strangest thing was when i was accelerating i would get a strong pull to the left but it would go away when i let off on the gas. also i had a very small coolant leak.

here is my theory.....

on the ps pump....since i was running fluid in the wrong direction it created a backpressure as i accelerated causing the pull.

with the cooling, same type scenerio. but it didn't run hot. temp stayed just below middle as it always does. thing was noisy as hell on the highway though, and got real bad gas milage.
I guess something about running things backward.

I drove about 300 miles that way. i also had some handling issues. very strange sensation.

anyway.....just wondering if my theory is correct. feedback?

Brian, I was doing some thinking on your problem and I relized before we fixed it on the trail, the water pump and fan had to have been going the right direction, or at least it is going the same direction as it was before we 'fixed' it. We should have taken a picture of the belt.

Here is my take and I would not live by it. As we don't have the picture to show, I would still bet that everything was turning the right way. I say this because even though the path was strange, the smooth (back) part of the belt was on the smooth pullies and the ribbed (front) was on the ribbed. I might be wrong but we could only tell if we could remember how it was on before we fixed it. To me, if the smooth part and ribbed part was the smooth and ribbed pullies than it would be turing the right direction. Does that make sense to anyone else?

Did that pull do away on the drive home?
By the way, this is in a 97 DI.

the pull was much less pronounced.

Atlantic British's website has a drawing of the proper routing.

Well, I think we got it right now, but i don't know if anything would have been going backwards really, I may be wrong. If nothing was going backwards I don't see that problem really, of course I would never advocate running it routed wrong for any amount of miles but if everything was turing right...

brian,

unless the belt is crisscrossed there is no way that the power steering could be run backwards

sounds like a strange senerio indeed about the leak and the pull?

if the water pump is strung wrong (belt on wrong side) it might have been run backwards but I am not sure how that could have been done? you can on some vehicles but as I look at it I cant see how you could do it on my 3.9?

musky....it is on a 4.0.

I can't even describe what i did. the only way for me to convey it is to do it again and take a picture. im curious enough that i might do it and post.

There are only 2 ways you could possibly put the belt on around the water pump and it would still turn the pum in the same, correct direction.

Dammmm......you guys are blowing my theory. i was really hoping that the pull was more than coincidence.

I have a theory, Your cursed:) Dude, you mean to tell me that you had yet another mechanical on a trip. I'm sorry I missed that trip and the corresponding breakdown picture. Thanks for the invite but I'm glad I had to decline. Can you take my manuals to work this week and I'll pick them up?

Sean,
thats the crazy thing about this, no problems at all that we know of he had just mentioned it to us and we looked at it and saw it was wrong.
