Anyone have any experience with www.tirechains.com ?

The diamond chains in particular. Here is the picture. They look like RUD chains to me.

tirechain

Thanks,

Greg

Thinking about Evan's place aren't you!!

From last year - they help alot

I was thinking about a set of the Rud chains myself.

Yeah, I went ahead and ordered a set of 4. They were $94 per pair. I should have them tomorrow. They had some that looked even more capable, but I didn't think they justified the extra $60. They had some extra loops installed on some of the loops at 90 degree angles. Probably provide extra traction, but don't know if that is needed or not.

Here is a picture of the same chains with the extra link. This would add $60 to the total order.

Do they install as simply as the Rud ones advertised on the Bill Burke site?

They appear to. Here are some links showing how:

Here is a movie showing installation. I think they are either made by RUD or are a copy. I'll let you know tomorrow when I get them what kind of packaging they have.

I read chains should be used on all 4 wheels - any thoughts or opinions?

Yes... all four but if you only have two put them up front so you have some directional control and traction for forward movement or stopping. Just watch the radius arms when turning.

I just carry two sets.

Tirechains.com sells chains that are made in China. They are a copy of a german/austrian design. They are NOT made by RUD or by Pewag or by Ottinger.

Are the RUD (etc) designed different or use harder steel chain? Who makes the tire chain at PEP and NAPA?

They should be here today so I can take a look at the quality. I imagine that they are a copy of the RUD then, cause they look almost identical in the pictures from the two sites. Don't know if they will be as sturdy or not, but they are what I could get my hands on fast for a reasonable price. Anyone know if the RUD or others Michael mentioned are more or less expensive?

It's been a while since I picked up my RUD chains but I think they were more expensive. If anyone is near NoVA I would be willing to meet up and compare chains if you have a set of these copies from China.

I just got mine from tirechains.com. They appear to be their own product. Nicely packaged in a carry bag for each pair. The chain and setup looks to be of pretty good quality, however I've never used nor seen a set of snow chains before so I'm only comparing it to general hardware knowlege. The workmanship on them seems to be pretty good though. The welds are very clean. Attention is paid to details. The fastening system looks pretty good, and they are self tightening via a ratchet system (similar to the looks of RUD).

Again, I don't have prior tire chain experience to compare to, so I have no clue how they stack up to other tire chains, but they look okay to me. But then again, what the heck do I know about tire chains. :)

Does the fact that they are made in China make them any better or worse than the european made ones? Just curious.

Greg, how long did it take to get them? I need to get a set for myself...

Thanks

John, I ordered them yesterday. Place the order by 3pm and you will probably get them next day. They weigh 49 lbs for all 4, and were shipped in a soft plastic pouch reinforced with tape. They are in their own heavy vinyl bags inside of the pouch. The place is in western PA so it got to me quickly for about $15 ground shipping.

I had to pay sales tax though. :(

Actually, the Chinese chains appear to be a hybrid copy of both RUD and Pewag design rather than strictly RUD. RUD holds several patents on tire chain design, one (I think) in particular is their "cross grip link" which protects the two of the three vulnerable links joined by that "O" ring you see on the Chinese copy from wear. The RUD design crosses links at that three-way junction in a manner not easily described.

RUD makes several types of snow chans, one of which is the Grip RUDs that BB4WA (or the RUD distributor in Phoenix) sells. Two sets of the Grips run about 280 with shipping. Two sets of Chinese steel at Tirechain.com with shipping is about 214. Unless, of course you live in PA, then I imagine you save some on the shipping charges.

The set I ordered yesterday just showed up. They are Chinese. Quality seems to be higher. Not planning on using them on pavement at all so hopefully the chain hardness will not be an issue . I've got a chain tool and assorted monkey and quick links in my kit if we have problems .

John , have you received my e-mails?

With shipping and sales tax, here in PA, I paid $226.53 for my set. The set with the extra links shown above would have topped $300 with shipping and tax I think.

I too, will only be using these in off road situations on a very limited basis. I imagine the chains should suit me fine for my use.

FYI - if you buy the Rud chains from Bill Burke and buy 2 axles worth (2 sets) it is $250.80 - you get a discount for ordering both axles.

I just splurged

This reminds me of another thread dealing with hi-lifts and the slightly cheaper Chinese knock-offs. Maybe I'm a fool and like to pay a few dollars more or maybe I just don't like cheap rip-offs.

There, I said it. :)

okay, so now your saying because I bought my chains from tirechains.com I'm a cheap bastard that would buy a knock off hi-lift????

hmmmmmmmm............

What makes the RUD so much better, other than being "Brand" conscious?

Greg, I really don't know. I was just speaking about me. :)

But I have used the RUD chains before buying them so for ME it was a case of past experience with the product. Same for the hi-lift.

As I said before, I would be glad to meet someone with a set of the tirechains.com chains and compare them to the RUD 4x4Grip chains I have.

Cant afford those swanky RUDs for your beloved Disco? Never fear! Just pick up a set of RUD Shoe Chains instead!

I don't know if RUD makes them but I bought a set of "Yaktrax" shoe chain's a couple of weeks ago at EMS and they are GREAT! Absolute sure-footedness and traction. I had one come off in deep snow once but I don't think I had it set right in the first place. A really "better idea" award candidate.
