Check out this article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2003/01/08/business/media/08SUVS.html?ex=1042693200&en=4c65574ab6ffe612&ei=5006&partner=ALTAVISTA1

Its a ad campaign based on those drug ads... the ones that go "This is stacey...this is stacies dime bag... this is stacies dealer" but now they are doing it about S.U.V.s and the gas they use.

Advertisers suck (I should know... im one)

Read it... enjoy it... tell a friend

Ridiculous. If you eat grain-fed beef that uses chemical fertilizers, then by this logic, you support terrorists. Oil is used for so many products, this argument is moot.

Last time I was at a gas station, there weren't just SUVs there but cars as well. And like Noee said, oil and oil by-products are used in so many other things that these types of arguments don't make any sense.

eating beef also causes world hunger (could feed starving people instead of tha cattle) and the destruction of rain forests (cut down the trees so the cows can graze on food that starving people should be eating), but it taste so good i cant help it..

Wow, this changes everything for me, I'm going to lunch right now, I'll drive my discovery to McDonalds and buy a bunch of big macs. Once I finish I'll go buy one of those hybrid hondas with those syntheitic rubber tires and plastic dash boards and nylon made seats. I'll feel much better about myself if I knew I didn't fund all those bastards from the middle east. I'm sure glad those ads reminded us how suvs are the only oil using products in the US and that all the people living the middle east are terriorists.

andy Suv owner and proud of it.

My big problem is that many vehichle do worse in terms of gas consumption than my Defender and don't get the attention SUV owners do. I live in the BF mountains of Colorado and the majority of the vehichles are pu trucks. Most of these are getting less mileage from a gallon of gas than any SUV yet don't deal with the same judgemental bullshit we do. And how about those minivans? I have a VW camper which gets about 17 or so but the enviro police don't mind it.
A year ago I was teaching an environmental science class at the high school and we thought we would take a look at mileage vs emmissions on 10 cars including mine. We placed microscope slides( with Vasoline) at a given distance from each tailpipe for one min at 2500 rpm and did particle density measurements. Guess what we found from the graphs? Teaching in BF Colorado most of the cars we tested were P/U (status symbols) and the ammount of particulates from many of these trucks was unbelievable. How do they get away with this? We are a non-emmission county.
The point of all this is that as a side conversation we began to talk about the mileage of these trucks (lifted/mudders/welded spider gears) and most of them were getting anywhere between 7 to 12 mpg. OUCH!

BTW the defender was an outlier; high mileage, clean and reasonable mileage:) SUV's ROCK!

Sean-
How's the moving East idea coming along? I checked out New Boston VT on a map after you mentioned it earlier. I never new it existed before that, it's in a nice location. FYI our largest newspaper reported yesterday that the average teacher's salary was at $39,165. The highest average in any town was $52,396. How does that compare to CO?

God Bless America!

Freedom of speech protects these morons, and allows them to say whatever they want...no matter if we agree or not.

Personally, I don't think they are well thought out, and anyone with a brain can see that EVERY Car uses gas, so I don't think it will make much of a difference.

Maybe, though, the poseurs who buy SUV's as a replacement for minivans will stop buying, then those of us who REALLY use them will be the only ones that have them.

Just my 2 cents

last night on ABC news they did a story on a new marketing target...woman as purchasers of pick-ups

they used a woman from here in chicago as there example she was driving a brand new 45k f350 4 door dualie v10 as her daily driver to take the kids to preschool and get groceries?

when it comes down to it most people will drive what ever they think is cool...hell I do, so who's to blame them.

when it becomes cool to save gas and use non fossil fuel alternatives then people will go that way.untill then its just gonna be bigger cars bigger SUV's...ect ect

then again even though economists say $5 a gallon wont matter I think with all the driving we americans do $5 a gallon will make the used car lots look like suv wrecking yards...it will be good for a cheap bastard like me I cant help but think of all the cool parts that will cost next to nothing!

Snowman,
The move east is on hold for now. My wife is pretty high up in T.Rowe and it would be difficult to find an equvilent position now. As far as salaries go here in Colorado, I would think the average in the state is around $36,000 or so. I still dont make my age even with two degrees. What can I say i was a career changer and knew what I was getting into:)
I'm tooling with the idea of returning to the real world for salary's sake. We are toying with the idea of making our way down the mountain to Denver. That would net me about $8,000 more and would give us a break from the 7 month winter here. I'm planning on driving the D90 to the gathering in VT this summer so if I do I'll be sure to get in touch. Cheers,
Sean

The local Sunday newspaper includes a copy of Parade. Hardly ever glance at it but the front cover caught my eye: "Today's families want more than just transportation. The New Family Car". Basically the SUV is the family car. I'm not sure why the enviro-nazis can't get that through their heads. A majority of families and people usually buy what they need, an all-around vehicle that can take you to work no matter the weather, take you camping, skiing, etc or take family and friends to events. With the move towards hybrids, on-board entertainment, sport type vehicle I can see the SUV becoming even more popular.

Hey Sean - from Florissant to Denver !! That would be a change. I hardly ever go to Denver, I try to avoid it. Now 7 month winters could be an issue. Can't believe I'm sitting inside this office when it's probably 70 deg out.

The cosmetic industry probably uses more petroleum than the SUVs we 'all' seem to be driving....so tell the soccer moms to stop wearing make-up, protest Revlon, and sell their Rovers! :)

If gas hit $5 a gallon, I'd make the switch to LP. Not as much power but at my house it's $1.09-$1.50 in the winter. Since my heating is LP, I'd get a bigger tank and never have to go to the gas station again!

susan, makes me think of that CSN song.. though it's about a different source for oil it's pretty neat song.

Over the years you have been hunted
by the men who threw harpoons
And in the long run he will kill you
just to feed the pets we raise,
put the flowers in your vase
and make the lipstick for your face.

Over the years you swam the ocean
Following feelings of your own
Now you are washed up on the shoreline
I can see your body lie
It's a shame you have to die
to put the shadow on our eye

Maybe we'll go
Maybe we'll disappear
It's not that we don't know
It's just that we don't want to care.
Under the bridges
Over the foam
Wind on the water
Carry me home.

Our LP is now locked in at $1.26 a gallon all Winter. I love your idea of a bigger tank at home to fill the cars! It seems common in the U.K., I wonder what's the holdup here?

Snowman,
Simply put, gasoline prices. Right now they are esentially the same. In the UK gas is $4 or more a gallon. There's no reason in the US to switch, until gas prices go way up.

I'm sure they would make some dumbass "government regulation" that made it so you couldn't fill your tank from your home, because Lord knows the gas station companies would lobby the hell out of it.

Saw the ad last night, as did my wife. She asked me, other cars around here use gas too don't they? She drives maybe 7000-8000 miles a year. That would be the same if she drove a Honda Civic 24000 miles, well, you get my point. Those ads are ridiculous. And what/who the heck is CSN?

Mine seems to run better when I fill up at a BP anyway. Maybe it just misses it's home land!

BTW...does BP gas really come from Britain? I'd like to think so.

The BP gas you're filling with could actually be Mobile or Texaco or even Shell. The only sure thing you get from going to BP is that the additives are BP additives.

As of last night it looks like the Springs is in 1st place. What do you think of the place? Kelly works on Briargate and I work in Woodland Park. We are thinking of Southwest but don't know much about it.

I think everyone will enjoy this. Pulled from http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/819750/posts

"Leading Hollywood liberal Norman Lear, who helped fund TV ads hitting the air this week charging that gas-guzzling SUV owners are actively funding terrorists, isn't much of an energy conservationist himself, judging by the 21-car garage he added to his Los Angeles estate five years ago.
The SUV foe's garage is "built to hold 21 cars and stands 45 feet tall," according to a Los Angeles Times report on the environmentally offensive structure. "Lear's neighbors in Sullivan Canyon contend that the structure, complete with a tennis court atop, was built in violation of city height restrictions and with misrepresentations about its size," the paper added.
"Lear's parking garage has ruined the aesthetics of the wooded canyon and blocked [his neighbors'] views," said the Times, which described Sullivan Canyon as "a quiet enclave that abuts state parkland."
"We're going to have this aircraft carrier deck out there. It's incredibly ugly," complained Lear neighbor Gene Albrecht. "It looks like a helicopter landing pad," said Rob Deutschman, another resident who opposed the SUV hater's exhaust-belching structure. .... The anti-SUV ads bankrolled in part by Lear were put together by political gadfly Arianna Huffington.
On Wednesday, Huffington got into an on-air tussle with nationally syndicated radio talker Sean Hannity, who called her on the carpet for her own gas-guzzling ways and whose producer, James Grisham, first unearthed the 1998 LA Times report on Lear. ... Hannity also asked Huffington her how large her California mansion was and how much oil she used to heat and cool it, to which the political gadfly responded, "That's none of your business."
After Huffington refused to detail any more of her personal energy consumption habits, Hannity unearthed a 1997 LA Times report revealing that her California home tipped the scales at 9,000 square feet."

Sean,

Have been in Colorado Springs since 1978. Moved here from St. Louis and still love it. Lots bigger now but still not Denver or St. Louis, which are both a lot bigger. I personally like some space around me and room for my toys. Southwest and down 115 is a nice area. Something to consider is that Powers will eventually be the I25 bypass so getting from the Southwest end of town to the Briargate area will be easier - that is Someday. There is also a stretch of homes that run from west of I25 to east of Rangewood, just north of Woodmen. They are a mix of older and newer homes on 1 and 2 acres lots. Called Thunderbird Estates, Falcon Estates, Columbine Estates. Relatively close to Briargate and access to highway 24 for you could be 30/31st street. I'm in Falcon Estates. Let's get together for a beer sometime.

LP users; When gasoline is $5 a gallon in the U.S. I will be making my first million on a different odorant. Diesel is colored to assure road use tax has been paid. With more people going to LP for over the road use, the Government isn't going to lose all that tax money! One way of proving road use tax would be different odorant than Ethel Mercaptain. I'm working on it.
