Hi there, Just a quick question regarding the MB GE 280 with three diff lock options, a 2.8 litre petrol engine, model year 1984, with 160,000 kilometers, and in fairly good condition. The question is, in terms of off road capability and overall reliability, are both vehicles comparable, what are the pro and cons of the 280 G-wagon. Is anyone familiar with the 280 G-wagon? Regards, Arman |

G-wagen rocks. Be prepared to lift a tire on every possible occasion, though. 'far as i know, these engines last upwards of 300k miles (in cars, probably less in a truck). peter |

Several of my friends have G-Wagons. One has a 280 and traded a Defender for it. He has had nothing but good things to say about it. He normally would trade trucks every year or two, but he's staying put on the G. In comparing stock to stock, I'd say the G is more capable. The 3 lockers REALLY make a huge difference. Adding lockers to the Disco would even things up a lot, but the G still has some advantages, like the short wheelbase, and the very short overhangs. The build quality is impeccable, and its even more overbuilt than the Rover. Either one will make a fine daily driver or offroad truck. If it was my money, I'd buy the G but this is coming from a person with 2 Rovers. -P |

I looked at a 230GD (2.3l diesel) one time and basically those older G-Wagens were "army" trucks. As it was described to me by the used car dealer who had it; it was a truck, rode like a truck, sounded like a truck. But it sure was cool! |

What I know of the G's is that the diesels lack torque, and the engine needs to work quite hard. Engine's are known to wear out rather quickly (at least here in europe) The military spec does look cool tough |
