I don't know too much about RRs, but I've come across what I think is a good deal on a 90RRC. It's got some rear brake issues, bushing issues and such, the engine only has 90K on it and the other stuff I know about can probably be fixed in an day.

Besides rear door rust and normal drivetrain checkout, what else should I look for? What are the problem areas on this version?

RangeRover.Net says this car has a 3.9. Is that true? I thought it was a 3.5, it's not stamped on the intake.

it's a 3.9 they didnt start marking it till late 1990 i think.

make sure the VC is working.

test the heater controlls and see if they all work. plus all the typical stuff. like does it sound and run well, how much oil is leaking, is the PS box good or is it on it's way out.

the ABS pump going off all the time is not always a good sign.

lift up the front driver and pass side carpets and check for potentially severe rust.

also do they have service history or anything? what tires on it? stick michelin's? if it has those stock michelin's they are expensive and that can be a sign that the previous owner had money and took it to the dealer.

The 1990 has a 3.9. I don't know what you are calling a good deal, but I wouldn't pay more than $4k for a VERY nice 1990 truck. I bought a pristine 1992 truck in November for $4200. When I say pristine, I mean 100% stock including the tires, no rust anywhere, and no leaks. That's right, NO LEAKS. Truck has been offroad twice in it's lifetime and I was there both times.

That was fast, thanks, I'm going to look at it tomorrow, I've only talked with the mechanic who has given it a good once over and recommended about 10 things to be fixed. He says it's got zero rust, we'll see.

I'm told it's never been offroad, second owner, engine replaced at 30K, good maintenance records, very clean interior, car now has about 120K on it. I think I can get it for around $3K.

Oh, BTW, how do I check the VC without lifting a wheel?

for some good info. on them throughout the years as to what each had and changes see:

http://www.fourfold.org/LR_FAQ/RR/FAQ.RR.RangeRoverC_US.html

you'll then know what to check to see if it still works!!

transmissions, transfer box, diffs, engines.... rovers are the are on the top of the lists for suv. they are the top at over a hundred grand canadain for new. but lets face it if there is no rust on the frame or in the body then its probablly worth it. i mean look at the prices that old series are fetching now a days. and yours is a classic. it should hold its value if in good condition. the only thing that scares me about yours is the braking issue. but tell the seller to fix the problem and give him a price. if they dont want to and will sell in as is then negiate with them. its up to you. let us know how you make out. check out some other sites and get prices on parts try atlantic british or rovers north they offer on line shopping and have prices there.

even the "good" ones will have issues. I picked up my 90 for sub-$2000 with a new 4.0 block. the drivetrain is 100% problem free. Its the other crap that becomes annoying. Such as switches, window regulators, heat.. or lack thereof, door locks, ignition barrell.. and so on. Just know what youll be getting into. It will most likely be an ongoing "project". I knew that going in, and luckily I have access to alot of easy fixes, but be prepared for the unexpected. Even with the issues, the classic range rover is an awesome vehicle.

Gave the rig a thorough ringing today, spent about 2.5 hours with it. Surpisingly few leaks, steering pump was the worst leak of all. The front and rear pinion seals were leaking a little too. Engine and drivetrain looked, sounded and felt fine, though the rear end swings right and left because the bushings back there are toast.

Anyway, I found the body rusted through under the pass side front sill, I could reach up and push the bottom of the interior carpet. It appears to run the length of the front door.

Is this common, looks like a hard fix?

The only thing in the interior not working was the driver seat switches and the tach.

Tach not working generally means the alternator is shot. About $100 for a fix or $400 for a replacement. I don't know about that rust. Sounds like an expensive fix. Front and rear pinion seals are a pain but not expensive. Bushings are a PITA too.

Sounds like someone just didn't want to spend the time fooling with this truck...

keep looking mate. im sure you will find one in better shape than that. leaking pinion seals probablly means that there is dirt or mud in there maybe even water. if their leaking than something is getting in. you will need not just back bushings but all bushings. so you will probablly end up putting shocks and coils on. power sterring pump needs replacing? rust? forget it. does the abs pump work? if not your looking at $6000.00 to replace ( canadain ) most time people just remove the dash light and then there is no warning of the problem. altenator is an other $800.00 item ( dealer ) quote. i would sugest to move on and keep looking. it took me three years to get the range rover in the sape that i wante and at a resonable price. plus you did mention that you dont know uch about them. belive me you will find the right one and even if you do spend a little more it will be worth it. if the truck has even surface rust on the chassi i would think. look for the original paint from the factory. no rust. the chassi should be black not rusty brown. their bodies are alloy and hide a lot of corrosion. check the inner fenders. you be the judge any how you decide

"rear brake issues" you will need calipers, rotors more than likely a complete brake job an i bet your abs pump is shot. i would say that this rover is parts. sorry to crush your dream. move on! for warned!

Yeah, after looking through my notes and the maintenance records (which stopped about 6 months ago), this rig just shapes up to be more of a project truck than I want right now. Funny thing I just found out this AM, the only other guy interested in it is looking to part it out...

Thanks for all the help, folks.
