Hey Everyone - I appreciate any and all advice anyone can pass along. I just got a 1999 Disco II a couple of weeks ago. I'm getting ready to sell my Sebring Convertible, but I'm going to strip the stereo equipment out of it first. It's got a really nice Sony head unit, as well as a Sony 10 disc changer, a Sony amp, and a bazooka sub. I'm trying to find info. on what the stock Harmon Kardon system in the Rover has. Can anyone help me out here? Is that a sub (albeit a weak one) in the rear door compartment? Is there an amp powering those Harmon Kardon speakers? Where is it and how powerful is it? What am I facing (money and time-wise) to have someone change out the factory head unit for the Sony and hook up the changer? Should I use the Sony amp as well? I can't remember the specs, but it's pretty powerful. Any advice is appreciated! Thanks -

Duane,
The Unit in the rear is a subwoofer (in the rear door). You can swap the radio's but you will lose the controls on the steering wheel. The amp is located under the drivers seat. Not sure what the wattage is though. I believe the system is 320 watts overall ...but not 100% sure.

http://www.go2pac.com/ has the adapter you can use to retain use of your factory buttons on the steering wheel. If you or anyone you know has put an aftermarket deck in their D2, I would like to know how, and what you used as an install kit. I've got a single din unit to put in my wife's D2 and can't find a kit to fit it. Let me know if you have pics.. Peace.. Robert

there is also an amp in the rear door with those twin crappy subs. junk it all. if you're the type that likes to do it all yourself (and if you own a rover, you must be), you'll spare yourself some aggravation by just rewiring everything. don't try to tie-in to the existing amps or subs. the inconsistency of the wiring code will drive you mad. with the kind of project you are talking about, you'd be better off just trashing your old system and rebuilding from scratch.

Robert - You do not need a kit to fit in a standard DIN into the Disco II. Only the face plate of the stock stereo is a 1.5 DIN...the body of the stereo that fits into the dash is just a regular DIN. I keep forgetting to take a picture of my install for you, but if you just pull out your stock stereo like half way, you'll see what I mean.

Good luck!

I would'nt junk it all but I definetly would change everything but the door speakers and tweets. When I had my system hooked up in my RR car toys had to do a complete rewiring. The only thing I kept was the door speakers. The whole system sounds awesome with a 12inch ecllipse titanium sub and a 1000 watt rockford power amp. But the factory sub and amp is crap unless your the easy listner type

Duane, I have just been through a similar situation. I bought a 2000 DII and wanted to use my very nice Alpine head unit and possibly my own sub and amp from my old car.

Circuit City installed my Alpine head unit, my amp, and sub. They used an adapter to go from the Alpine to the factory amps/crossovers, and the Alpine has a subwoofer output for my amp/sub. (the factory sub works with the rear channel, which i think it did with the factory head unit)

*** Make sure that they get all of the L/R, F/R, and factory sub phases correct. The first time they did mine, they got something wrong and it sounded like crap. Took it back, and now sounds great!

I knew my sub would sound good, but to my surprise, the bland sounding factory speakers now sound tremendously better. The HK components are actually very good, they just needed a little reinforcement! If your radio has crossovers built in, you can take some of the bass out of the factory speakers and the whole thing will sound much cleaner.

Hope this helps,
Lee Cunningham

prescott is right. junk it all but the speakers. the hk's are decent and will sound better with the new amp and sub. mine did not have the hk's, and i prefer to go with a company that makes speakers their priority, such as infinity. apples and oranges probably, but it's hard to touch the kappas with a basslink. the main thing is the wiring. you'll drive yourself nuts tapping into the disco's. just bite the bullet and re-wire it all.
