My '89 RRC has had a god aweful antifreeze smell. But i can never spot any large puddles in my floor boards. I have read on a couple post about the o-rings in the heater core going bad. Is that my case? How can i figure out if it is my heater core or the o-rings? If it is the o-rings, how do i get to them under the dash board. I hear that it is a whole lot easier getting to the o-rings than it is the heater core. But i have not had to mess with this yet. If anyone has had a similar experience let me know what to do. I am also willing to replace the o-rings to see if that is the problem. But i need to find out where they are and if that is the culprit.

Thanx for any input!

it is a major ordeal to change the heater core. i have heard that it can be o-rings and it can be cracked plastic at the tips of the pipes.

i think any way you slice it it is a long weekend job to get in there. and you might just want to replace it at that point, cause god knows you dont want to do the job again. i've been half way into mine and realized i would not have finished in time for work on monday, this was saturday at 5pm :)

I am fairly certain that the o-ring situation is on the second generation RR, not the classics.

The coolant may just be barely seeping out of the core. Try smelling the air flowing thru the floor vents. If smell is strong then coolant is inside the heater box assembly(leak). I would replace the entire assembly if the core is leaking.

You can also bypass the heater core hoses if leak is real bad.

I drove around for a year with a bypassed heater simply because I dreaded doing this job (even though i had a new core and hoses sitting in garage). It's a royal PITA.

If you going to do the job I would replace both the core and hoses and anything else you find just so you never have to dig into it again for a long time.

Good luck-
My 2 cents-
