He he.

That was actually a smooth touch down. I was slowly crawling up and the front end lifted up about another foot higher than that and I let of the gas and it came back down.

I think just time and use made it give way. I have 84K on the Rover, about 40K being with 32" or 33" tires.

When it actually broke, I had the wheel turned hard into a side of a rut and was trying to climb up and out. The TT sends all the torque to the wheel with the most resistance, so it blew up. I had to drive it for a bit to get out of the trail, so the broken bits rolling around in there made it worse.

Naaa yore gonna have to weld that one back together....
Old Slll or early defender CV's could help that problem... Course that means new axle shafts too...

somebody's got to make a CV eliminator kit for LR, just like MC did for Toyota.

from the size of it, it looks like 297X cross should fit in the housing.

Peter,

its been done allready, I have read a few articles from over the pond of guys that have done it. It appears very simple.I think a few guys on the POR board have as well.

I could live with the herky jerky in tight turns on the street but most LR guys would hate it I'd guess. Cv's are so much smoother.

but it would hold up to 35's no problem given the small power in these things. and with the CTM's and Ox u-joints even Greg Davis would most likely be good to go with those 36's..lol..on a D2 it looks like it would be a cake walk its pretty much a ford 9" straight axel with dana ball joints and chevy IFS knuckles if you look at it.plenty of room for a small 297x.

Thom is right...
The guys on the POR board know more...one or two have actually done it.

Timm Cooper is working/put together a kit to make the conversion i believe...

Timms Conversion incorporates early (read bigger) Defender 110/Slll CVs and a new axleshaft. The single and drive flange is also much deeper so alloy wheels would need some machining to fit. Early Rangies used this same setup. They've been doing it across the pond for a while.. Toyota FJ40 birfields ar about the same size but would require alot of bodging to make them fit.. But in the end it would be strong enough for 35's with out that kathunk kathunk around corners.. He'll have it perfected (available for mass sales) soon

Keith...thats not the conversion i was thinking of. That type of kit has been available through GBR for quite awhile now. It is just the early 110CVs, special flanges, 23 spline (1.20 inch dia.) axle shafts, etc.
Im talking about using an actual U joint instead of CV joint. I believe that timm is working on the u joint conversion.....

I get what you're saying Will but as much as Timm HATES u Joints (I swear if he could he'd put Some type of CV (not DC)in his driveshafts!!
I almost doubt it... But i need to talk to him about a "Super Secret" project Tomorrow so i'll ask... I would have to think that The bigger CV from a Def would be as strong as a Toyota FJ 40 Birfield... I managed to "modify" those a tiny bit and run them with 35's and a SBC with some power< Lincoln Lockers and all! The 297's in my Jeep blew up a lot this summer... Of course that was after Timm and i got into the conversation about my unbreakable D44... Piss me off!!!!
About that super secret biz... If you're into extreme stuff and are thinking about new rear axles? Wait...
Just a thought. A
As far as getting the word out for these new goodies i'll ask Tim how he'd like to approach it, But i'm sure he's thinkin' "the more the better!!!!

Okay guys hold on to your hats!!!
Well only if you're wearing one. The story goes like this... Timm has tested (in his own particular fashion) both the 297 spicer cross and earlier alloy versions and the big 90/110 CV's (not Defender) in a straight up comparison the Big Rover CV is stronger.. The ears bust off the u joint shafts before the Alloy u joints failed (this I know to be true as I have a D44 in the front of my Jeep)
Anyway to make a long story short the big Rover CV is stronger that the 297 and Toyota FJ80 birfields...
Timm is offering a "Much stronger than stock" conversion for Coilers and Series trucks that would include all the machining and parts to make it much stonger including axle shafts and CV's... The cost is less than $1000 (i'll let Timm qoute prices) Small ball coilers will be a little more involved due to more fussing to make it all fit..
Now strictly for the Very Serious... Defender Disc's for Series trucks!!! Timm has put together some parts that will allow you to put Defender Disc's on your series truck, the only other thing you might need would be a Dual circuit power brake assy to make it all work very nicely!!! Timm will supply new Swivel ball housings and hubs.. You provide rotors and calipers everything else interchanges!!! That's cool... Now if you really want to get Serious with your late coiler, put bigger Swivel balls from a series with full 3/4" bore taper bearing and a 1" Railko bushing and you won't have to worry about tearing that 37" tall tire off those tiny pins in our late swivel balls..
