The rotors on the D2 don't have enough meat on them to turn (cut) the rotors. Is he telling you that you need both pads AND rotors at 19,500 miles?

Pads I can understand at those miles but rotors as well...gee! I would double check that just to make sure.
Al, is right you can't turn the rotors on a DII.

Well, it depends. Did they say you needed rotots? More than likley if they said you need brakes they ment pads. Ask them just to make sure.
I got about 25K or of my first set of pads. Have not changed the rotors yet.

You would have to check the rotors to see if you can do that. FWIW, I was able to get about 40k out of my first pads and rotors. Most people get about 30k to 45k.

Do it your self...very easy. You can get the pads from Nathan and Discount Rovers for alittle over $100.
Where are you located?

Get the Ferodo (sp?) pads. I think they're the OEM supplier and work well. As Eric said, it's a very easy job to do yourself.

Dealer is full of shit - where the hell do they get off charging that much? parts at the most are $200 - $250/300 for labor?

like everyone else says - change the pads yourself - I used Ferodo - replaced mine about 25K - drive alot in stop and go traffic

The job takes about 1 hour - 2 if you stop for a beer brake - so simple - check out www.expeditionexchange.com - tech section for a step by step instruction

Rover mechanic I spoke with said rotors should last 100K

Maybe your pads wore too low -

what do you mean my pads wore too low

If your pad wear got to low they will start to scratch and scrap the rotor at the point were the pads are rivited to the bracket and then the rotors would need to be replaced. You would probably know this...it would make bad noises and they would have told you at the shop about this and not to drive it.

I went on one hell of a rant here about my rotors and pads when the dealer at my 22K service told me .... replace it all!

I went another 5K on my fronts... put the ferodo's on (myself... EASY) and then went another 5K before the rears... never hit the rivets or anything...

The dealer says the Rotor's are wear items. This sounds like large pile of BS to me...

Anyways, my rotors are somewhat uneven or scored (not from rivets) and I've been told that it is no big deal... the pads will conform and the rotors will be trued up by the pads (if they are truly a wear item) or the pads will conform... We are happy as pie.

If you look at the specs on the rotors of the D2 they are pretty much wear items. The fronts can generally last a little longer but the rears are minimal. They should have better rotors but my guess is they were cutting corners to reduce unsprung weight. At least the rotors on the D2 aren't as expensive as some others that I've seen.

For the $500 and change you can do all four corners (pads and rotors) and pick up some beer yourself.
