Did anyone watch that show "Worst Case Scenario" last night? The show aired a story about that woman in the Blazer who lost her brakes coming down Lion's Back. This was the first time I heard her story. According to the show, she and her husband were fourwheelers and they went to Moab in their Blazer for their honeymoon.

If I remember the story correctly, she told her husband that she wanted to do Lion's Back alone. I'm sure most of you have seen the video of her getting air on the way down Lion's Back when her truck's brakes let go. Luckily, the injuries were limited to broken bones and such, as well as recurring nightmares about the incident.

This woman recently came back to Lion's Back to finish what she started. Jeep lent a Rubicon TJ for the show, and local guide Dan Mick rode shotgun with the woman up and down Lion's Back. She did great too. The previous accident must have been really hard on her, because the show said that neither she nor her husband wheeled at all since the first incident. Also, the woman just totally broke down in tears just as soon as the TJ came off the bottom steep section and was on level ground again (although she was cool and collected while driving).

Anyway, I thought it was a cool human interest story of a very gutsy woman. Most people who visit Lion's Back just stand there, snap a few pics, turn around, and drive back to the motel. This woman did it, alone. And when her truck crapped out and she almost died, she recovered and when she was ready, she went back and did it again.

damn,, well i for one stood there and looked at the lions back, with a fresh reck jammed into the side of the rock.,. i think it had happened a week prior. my mother had seen the lions back footage and i was forbidin from driving that, thank god, mom was my easy out...

interesting that she was experienced, she was always dismissed as a 'dumb bitch' who didn't know how to wheel...

even the most experienced offroader in the world (someone at the level of...say....Perrone) would have trouble defying gravity with no brakes :)

I'm not sure how experienced the woman was. The show said that she and her husband liked to wheel. And if a husband and wife go to Moab for their honeymoon, I would think that they like to wheel. But then again, I wonder what gear that Blazer was in when it was getting air time down Lion's Back. The woman said that on the way down, she was doing fine and everything was controlled, and then suddenly the brake pedal went to the floor and she totally lost control of the vehicle's speed. I'm sure there are those who say she should have been in first gear low or should have used her parking brake. Whatever. Even if she lacked skill or experience, it's not as if she was doing something stupid when the shit hit the fan. And I also think whatever she lacked in experience, she made up for it in guts when she went back and finished the job.

After this happened I talked to Pat gremillion of pull pal and he told me he had friends there watching as it happened, as it was told to me they where very expierenced and her husband had been up and down it a number of times before her fatefull journey. I also seam to recall the truck had an automatic in it so being in first gear on that steep of a decent compression braking aint gonna help much.

the part that impressed me was back after it happened the news coverage of her from the hospital bed she said she turned off the side because at the bottom there where so many people she didnt want to run anyone over...kudos to her for placing other people ahead of herself.

i believe that.

very few things get me pissed more than a bunch of morons at the bottom of the hill, when it is known that not everyone makes it up or down safely.

Yeah, I saw that by accident night. Most amazing footage. Most amazing. Did anyone notice what appeared to be airbags? Each time the truck hit and flipped, I thought I saw a flash of white.

Kudos to her for doing it again and for agreeing to let a bunch of strangers watch.

Experienced? Like muskyman said, the truck had already made several trips down. Nice of the husband to turn the truck over to his wife for a solo run...after the brakes were sufficiently heated/spent.

John the first time I went to Moab was about two weeks after that accident had happened (EJS of ’90 I believe). I went with a Ford group (Ford Rendezvous, and no that’s not where I got the name) and they had a copy of that footage which they showed on the last night we were together.

The story they told us (now this was only 2 weeks after the fact so take it for what its worth) was that the wife decided to drive up lions back and as she turned around to head down the brakes gave out, someone said it was a micro lock system who knows. Apparently the husband who was in the passengers seat tried to help by reaching over to put the trans in park and inadvertently knocked the t-case lever into neutral.

The truck apparently had a full cage inside, 4 or 5 point belts and a custom front bumper of which all these things kept anyone from getting hurt worse.

I had gone up Lions back a couple of times during the day in the Bronco, then later that evening they showed everyone the tape. That night we met a local at a bar that bragged about running lions back backward and at night, so I said come on lets go (John you know I couldn’t resist) well my brother followed him up lions back (he doesn’t drink and I was doing enough for both of us) and I remember how helpless I felt sitting in the passenger side wondering when the brakes would give out. That was a psychological ‘E’ ticket ride I’ll never forget.

And regarding the whole Lion's back issue, since that's what the thread is about. No matter what the circumstances of this lady's accident, at least she was driving up and down Lion's back in a sane fashion. Park rangers told me the one that went over the edge last year, and ended up wedged upside down between the rock faces, was caused by people trying to pass each other on the steep part instead of going one at a time. That can't be a very good plan.

Rick,

there was a lot of noise about that incident last year. think it was a 4Runner that went down.

for those lion's back veterans, is there much room to turn around on top? the other night, i saw a photo of something like 8 baby jeeps coming down in a long line, and wondered how'd they managed it.

LOL! Sorry, didn't think I'd be out that long ... For the love of God, it's Discoweb Friday, had to get back to the computer!!

I've seen a couple of clips & brief interview type things about the Lion's Back ordeal, but never knew about the full cage inside etc. Yeah, the fact that she had the wits about her to turn away from all the people really does say something. About the nerves - after seeing that video clip so many times, that is one where I'd definitly need to get the diapers out of my recovery gear bag first.

I can see multiple vehicles turning around up top but these guys were passing each other on the steep incline. One was going up and the other going down. There may be enough room technically but if either driver gets the shakes it ain't gonna be good.
