Went to the parts dept at my local Rover dealership (main line in Haverford PA) and was told that his RRC gained 4-5 MPG and even a little HP with the filter. I was shocked, and don't know if it's true. How's it go.?. "if it sounds too good to be true..."

"...kick him square in the nuts!"

A 4 to 5 mpg increase in mileage is a 25 to 35% increase (based on a 14-15mpg average). This guy is either lying or he is using some other gadget like a Tornado or ProLong engine treatment or something.

yeah.. I'm only getting 11. I just replaced the plugs, so I'm hopping I'll get one or two more.. Looking for as much as I can get though. 4-5 would be almost 50%!

I put a K&N on my '94 Disco which I had before I got my current RRC. By my calculations at the time, I was lucky to get a consistent 1 mpg improvement. I've also put them on a number of my other vehicles (VW turbo diesel, Volvo turbo and an Audi 2.8 Quattro) and have seen similar mileage percentage improvements. A 4-5 mpg improvement on a Rover V8? No way.

Now if you want ease of maintenance, a bit better throttle response; maybe.

My $.02

I kinda thought the guy was a little nutty when he said this. I just wanted to believe him!! Either way, even 1mpg would be a 9% increase for me. Well worth the $60 pricetag. (save ~ $113 a year in gas)

Jason,

Have you had any experiance with the Prolong engine treatment or "Tornado" (that's the spiral fin thing you put in the intake somewhere, right?) helping out even more?

Bob,
I put the K&N air filter in my 89RRC a year ago, and after a week of driving with it, I noticed a really significant boost in hp which I could tell from my RPM gauge (I never dyno'd the truck, but it was evident from pedal response) On normal every day driving, the car definelty had some extra power on it, and for the $30 bucks I paid for it, I have no regrets. As for the gas increase, thats ridiculous!!! I'm getting the same mpg as before, maybe almost 1mpg better, but not enough to tell. Power increase though is pretty nice, for a $30 dollar part.
Just my feeling about it,
Ben
p.s. $60 is a bit much for the filter...

I have one on my 87 RR and it does make a difference in performance. I'd have to agree with everyone else on the mileage, though. I still get 10 mpg . . . . One thing about the K&N is that it breathes better than stock, but it also doesn't filter as well. I swap back to the OEM filter for offroading and dusty fireroads. Saw a study done on a BMW that measured the amount of particulates that got through the K&N vs. the stock Bmer filter and it was really a high number for the K&N. I don't recall where I saw it, somewhere on the net. A search might turn it up.

Oh, and $60 is way too much!

I have an 88 RRC and gained some performance. No gain in MPG. I get an average in SoCal of 12-13 MPG. Alot of freeway and grades. $30.00+/- is what I paid. Anybody doing different exhaust (smog legal) to improve the get up and go on a 3.5

I guess I'm sold on the K&N but for a different reason. I'll check around and see where to find one for $30. Thanks for the tips and clarification!

Check out www.summitracing.com their prices for K&N Filters is usually pretty good. Oh, and I won't charge you a finders fee for that bit of information unlike the lame moron in the RR Hunter posting!

Bob,

the Tornado and Prolong comments were a tongue-in-cheek jab at the K&N being a magical device offerring a load of improvement. Prolong is likely to do nothing to, if not ruin, your engine (I kinda recall a class-action lawsuit against them for deceptive advirtising, etc). The Tornado doesn't do a thing...even if it did put a "vortex-like" swirl into the air flow, any advantage would be moot when the air hit the plenum.

I use a K&N just because I like having an extra gadget around and possibly feeling good about not throwing away a filter ever 10K miles. It doesn't offer a substantial performance or mileage increase anymore than the Tornado or Prolong engine treatments.

(just for the record, that "Bob" is a different "-bob-" referenced to: RR Hunter)

Thanks for all the info guys. I hope to someday learn and be able to give back the knowledge I have gained from the Rover experiance!

Atlantic British has them for $39.

When I added the K&N to my '87 I "noticed" a slight improvement. (if could be all mental though).

The only thing I have found to give me a really noticable improvement was when I switched the whole truck over to AMSOIL. I have changed all the fluids over, and it drives like a different truck. I can consistently get 19-20mpg on mid-grade gas. I also have much less cold starting problems which when living in VT happens quite often.

Sorry to hi-jack the post.

Tim Brown

How many miles were on the (Rangie?) when you made the switch to AMSOIL?

The odo has been changed at least twice so I am "guesstimating" at about 150K

"Sounds like we have an AMSOIL representative on the board!!!"

And yes, I am a dealer, but I only became a dealer after I tried some in my rig. I apologize for unintentionally hi-jacking the thread. If you have any questions you can direct them to me via e-mail. [email protected]
