When I shift my Disco into reverse (automatic) it makes an almost crunch sound as it is going in. Is this normal??

I get the same sound. After 2 years of it with no major problems, I chalked it up to normal.

See my post in "Noise when selecting reverse." If you park on a grade and shift the automatic transmission into "P" before setting the parking brake, the vehicle will lurch forward slightly when you lift you foot off of the brake pedal and load up the transmission (i.e., the transmission in P keeps the vehicle from rolling on the grade). When you eventually shift back into R from P, you can get a "clunk" sound and possibly some resistance while trying to shift into R, as the stress on the transmission is relieved. The easiest way to avoid this is come to a stop using the foot brake, shift into neutral, apply the parking brake, lift your foot off of the brake pedal, and then shift into park. Then the parking brake, which brakes the drum on the transmission, is now carrying the load, not the transmission itself. Especially useful offroad where you may "park" on steep grades.

This may not be THE cause of your noise, but this scenario commonly results in the noise you described.

My noise comes when I go straight from Drive to Reverse on flat surfaces after having been driven. When I go out first thing in the morning and go straight to Reverse from Park, no clunk.

It's done it since I bought the truck, and hasn't caused any problems yet.

Sounds like normal "driveline windup". Very common in disco because of the gear driven t-box. Think of it as a good thing because it could have a chain driven t-case and be smooth but not as strong.
