I've got to work on the rover, and I can't wait till spring. All I have is a driveway. I was considering purchasing one of those torpedo-shaped hot air blowers, and pointing it at the general work area, but I've never used one before. Are they any good? Fumes?

Would an electric one be ok, or do I need a gas/propane version?

Any other ideas welcomed

Thanks
Dean

Dean,

I've got one of those. I use it in the winter and I have a garage. If I was going to use it outside I would get the biggest baddest one you can find. Mine will heat the entire garage in about 3 min when on high. I have to be carefull where I point it though because it winds up heating up my beer.

The only downside is that it burs through propane fast.

Man, that sucks!

First I would try to find someone with a garage that would not mind letting you work in it or helping.

If that does not work I would use lots of layers, and maybe an inferred heater, they heat the object and not the air, so if you have it pointed in your direction it will heat you and what you are working on.

We have one of those heaters...it's HUGE and runs by both Kerosene and electric. Although we use it mostly in an out building (my dad bought it for our garage and gave it to my fiance when they moved)...they do really make a difference. Of course, outside, the heat just might be lost, but if you are in some sort of protected area I'm sure it would help a little.

With that one, there are some fumes, but as long as the back end is ventilated, I've never had a problem with it.

Good luck!

Brian,

Do you have a propane one like this?

http://www.heatershop.com/propane_forced_air_85_fac.html

I was looking at one like that for my garage, but it said it needed ventalation so I was a bit worried about using it inside the garage.

Do you have yours vented?

i stick my hands down my pants. and then remove them after a period of time that i deem sufficient to start working again.

dave,

yup...thats what i have. After my eyes start burning and watering and I can't see anymore, and if I havn't become too sleepy, I then go for the ventalation buton. aka...gargage door opener.

Wow Brian,

I think I will just deal with the cold, better cold and alive than cold and dead.

I have the garage insulated and dry walled so it does not get that cold, I just throw on an insulated flannel shirt and I stay warm enough while I am working.

Funny, I just did a brake job this AM in the driveway, it was about 40 degrees F. Luckily, it is a quick job (pads only). I've got the kerosene "jet" that is somewhat helpful if you're in one place.

When we finally build the garage, that forced air propane unit will be tops on the list.

Dean-
Have you considered a portable garage? They are heavy plastic or vinyl and generally about 10'x20'. They have a zippered door and you could use a smaller heater. Plus it will cut down on the wind, which I believe is the worse part in the "outdoor" repair business. Your neighbors will hate it but you can always threaten them with keeping it up permanently if they bitch.

Damn, GP, doesn't the fast orange hand cleaner with pummice hurt when you're scrubbing the grease off your balls?

I just freeze my ass off in my drive way. No heater, no warmth, just me, the Disco, and the cold.

I either suffer, or find a garage... I've got one I can use, but, I don't want to wear out my welcome all of the time, either....

I looked at the heater on your link, Dave....

I find it odd that a heater shop would be in Florida, actually.....

Eric,
Last year I had to use water to clean something from the frame, and it was freezing. It was so fucking cold every time I put my hands down I would stick to the driveway. Life's just too damn short to work like that....

I usually have someone else stick their hands down my pants. That way, I don't have to scrub off the grease.
It doesn't warm me up much...but it takes my mind off the cold!

Where do they sell Rovers to people without garages? I set a timer to flip over every 10 minutes on my radiant heated floor. What pants?
