What codes were shown? Valve jobs....it's a Rover, but look at the codes and let us know what it was.

Extremely likely that it really does need a valve job. The 4.0 in the Disco is known to have valve-issues, with mileage and age... '96 was the first year for the 4.0 in the Disco, and the mileage is over 50k...

You could try to take it to one of those high-tech internal engine-cleaning places, that hook the engine up and pump a bunch of cleaner through it and then back out. Short term, you could also try some over-the-counter cleaners like BG44K, but, in the long run, the valves will need to be done.

Good luck,

The cleaners will do you no good. In the rover the carbon problem is that the carbon gets between the valve and the guide on the exhaust side and sticks the valve open. No cleaner will clean inside the valve guide on the exhaust side. LR has a new exhaust valve and shorter guides to combat the problem but the repair is too new to know if it is effective. If the valve sticks wide open it will contact the piston and cause more damage.

Is the valve promblem common to all year rover 4.0's? I have a 98 DI with 64K miles. Will it eventually also need a valve job or is this something that was fixed in the later years?

Didn't they change the valve in later engines to include a carbon break - 99 onwards, maybe?

To pull the heads is labor intensive, but also very easy to DIY. Then you take them to a machine shop for them to check the heads and do whatever work is required. If you do the work yourself, maybe $400-$500?

i had a similar problem on my '97 DI, i used Valve Medic in mine and it fixed the problem. the Check Engine light will stay one for 30 start/stops unless you have it reste at the dealer for like $65. not saying this will fix your problem, but give it a try before spendig the big bucks. LR told me mine needed a valve job, but it obviously didn't.

A real liquid cleaning, such as what is used on inboard boat engines will most likely work most times. Most of the stuff that is sold at car parts stores won't. Check with a reputable marine engine mechanic and see what they use and get some and try it. It is worth the effort, given the cost of having a $tealership do a valve job for you. If you are somewhat mechanically inclined and need a valve job, consider doing the labor of R&R'ing the heads yourself and letting a good automotive machine shop do the valve job. This will save you $$$$.

Lr just came out with a new exhaust vale and a new guide for the intake and exhaust valves. They have been out for about 9 months now. The new exhaust valve is a black nitrile (?) material and the new guides are shorter.
