I recently bought my 1st Disco, a '96, and I just discovered this site today. Great fun. How do I get the clock out to replace the bulb? Thanks.

Remove the button set below the clock by pulling it straight out. Then pry on the clock between the center trim and the clock until it pops out.

This is definitely not a Land Rover approved repair. First, a little background. I too just recently purchased a '96 Disco, and found that the clock light was not working. I figured it was just the bulb, and that it would be an easy repair. To remove the clock, you must release 4 catch tabs which hold it in place. On the top, one is near the left edge and the other is slightly right of center. On the bottom, they are near the left and right edges. All tabs are about and inch and a half back from the face of the clock. I used two credit cards, inserting one on the top and one on the bottom, pushing them almost all the way in in order to reach the tabs. Then, using a small screwdriver, lightly pry out on each side. If you have to use too much pressure, you probably have not released the tabs. By the way, the hazard light switch is part of the clock assembly, and will come out at the same time.

Once the clock is out, you can replace the bulb assembly, or check out the FAQ for a write-up on how to just replace the bulb.

However, in my case, changing the bulb did not fix the problem. I took the clock apart and found what I thought was a bad diode in the cicuit. Since I'll generally try anything once, I decided to bypass the diode by wrapping a piece of wire around the wires coming out of the diode. I plugged the clock back in, and found that the light was working. Good enough, I thought, and put it all back together. Unfortunately, I didn't bother to test drive it, so the next day while my wife was was driving it to work, smoke started coming out of the dash. Needless to say, she was a bit disturbed. I met her where she had pulled over, and disconnected the clock, and sent her on her way. That evening I took the clock back apart and found melted plastic and a smoked resistor. However, the clock was still working, so I removed my "fix", and put it back together and reinstalled. The next day, she informed me that not only was the clock still working, but the light was too, and no smoke this time. Apparently all that smoke trapped in there was preventing the light from working, and it just needed to be released. Neither I nor Land Rover suggest this technique as a way to fix your light. Of course, at $119 for a new clock from Land Rover, I am glad I got lucky.

Craig..

FUNNY.. I did EXACTLY the same thing.. I tracked it down to what I though was a bad diode also, and jumped it.. I tested it before I put it back together and the resister next to the diode started smoking.. OUCH.. so I cut the diode off and put it back together thinking oh shit.. Gonna have to get a new clock.. Then wolla.. It worked.. Go figure...

I think this deserves a tech article. We'll call it "Smoke Removal from Clock Housing".
