Anyone ever think about quitting your day job and becoming a Rover mechanic?

I know some of you guys have made that kind of change (Ho and John at least). What was the kicker, what was going through your head at the time?

um....yeah.....every god damn day man. i have even tought of killing some of my co-workers (bosses), grinding them up in a food processor and making them into Equal tire balancer. then using it in the rovers i would like to sell some day. :)

I used to day dream about wheeling every day and I have spent lots of hours trying to find a way to make good money doing it. Thought about starting a 4x4 touring company and countless other stuff. My problem was having 4 kids....imediate income is necissary. I still think it would be fun to be a mechanic.

I did the next best thing. I started selling rovers.

with the huge number of SUV's on the road I think about openning a 4x4 only service center all the time. most the dealers are making a killing changing u-joints and doing brake jobs. the rover market is tempting but working on all brands would make more cash I'd guess. I see 2 dozen suv's lined up at the ford dealer near me every day. and they are charging 70hr right now for standard service.

Our local Land Rover 4x4 service center (very well known) now works on and advertises repair and service for all makes of 4X4's. I believe they started that just last summer. The parking lot is always full and it's always extremely busy. I believe their labor rate is only $58.00 and they are absolutely one of the best for LR. I believe as a business adventure it's quite a recession proof service to offer. People buy and spend when the economy is humming and fix em' up when things go south. A consistent customer base, can't beat that! Believe it or not one of the busiest services for a bad economy is a cobbler! Myself I always dreamed of being a hand model but a powertool accident ruined my dream.

Wow did I open myself up on that one! Anyway I did see the classic "Show about nothing" last week, it had me grinning for two days. Also rented "Spinal Tap" on DVD recently, it wasn't any funnier but gotta love that resolution.

I'm currently dreaming of buying a large farm in Vermont and opening up a B&B where City folk can come up and drive tractors, feed animals (no Garrett, you can not "make it" with my animals) and do general farm stuff. I'd also love to have a Christmas tree farm, and have a pair of Belgian horses to pull a sleigh and use for timber extraction. One day, one day.

Porn..now there’s a career change I could handle. Just my personal viewpoint but I feel getting paid to have sex beats being a mechanic, or just about anything else for that matter, hands down.

$25.00-$35.00. My father just came back from Amsterdam (Cannibus Cup Judge) and brought a whole bunch of these home. They are the best thing since sliced bread. Cleans and seeds perfect.

I could make a hundred or so for probably $15 to $18 bucks a piece. Do you need a supplier

You can buy them in bulk for $10 to $12. Aluminum or Brass. The wood ones sell for $10 buy for $4. I dont sell them my dad just brought a whole bunch back and everyone is going ga ga over them on how well they clean.

Christopher Dynak (Adtoolco)

Hmmmm...I could do it for that price but bulk is the key. If your dad needs another supplier let me know. By the way the one i saw and was planning on using as, ahem, sample merchandise had three chambers, a fine screen to filter out the pixy dust. It was nice hardware. The guy who had it said he paid $75. Would you want a sample grinder when I'm done reverse engineering it.

From what my brother was telling me this is new. He lives in Austin. He is very familiar with the scene and has plenty of friends that could be potential customers. Another idea hit various Flea Market vendors. The Idea is Bulk.

John-
No problem! Zak's dream is very real and from his posts I am sure it will no doubt happen. No doubt the part hardest to deal with for many people moving to VT is matching their former salary. A common bumper snicker around here is "Moonlight in Vermont or starve!", and it's sadly quite true for many.

Not sure I would need to take taht large of a paycut. The price of houses up there and land is pretty resonable compared to down here. Plus, my wife is an Architect, and she can work part time designing houses for all those hated tourists!!!!

And, I'm going to install a pretty high end home theater in my Inn or B&B. I jsut hate staying at those places, and having nothing to do at the house at night. Ours will have tons of stuff to do.

Hey Zak-
Sounds like a really great plan. You are correct about evenings at B&B's, at least have ESPN or NESN! My neighbors started a small Christmas Tree venture last year. They will be selling trees in about 5 years. An added plus for me is the beautiful view of the trees. Now if I can just find something for my cute kids to sell at the end of my driveway to all of their tree customers. I am considering Vermont cider and orange cognac. By the way I am still car shopping, how's your search progressing?

Still shopping as well. I have at least narrowed it down to the VW TDI, used Saab 900, used Subaru Impreza (would really like a WRX) and now I'm trying to see if i can get a Disco or RRC with a turbo diesel for under 13 grand. That would be the best option!!!

What about you? What are you looking at?

We have a ton of different ideas for a small farm/B&B, so one of these day's we'll do it. Just love it up there. Plus we're really getting sick of the nasty people down here.

I worked on a Christmas tree farm for years when i was in high school and college. Made a ton of money in tips. And during hte spring we planted new trees. Lots of fun, and lots of work. It's one of the few buisness's where just about everyone is in a good mood when they are buying your products!!!

my one buddy up there. (southeast of shelburne) has an organic farm that seems to be doing well. and he and his uncle also tap several hundred maple trees on there properties. they don't live the 'high life' (well in some ways), but they are having a good time.
there are a few good small architecture firms up there zak. if you need me to point you to them just let me know. there are a few good ones in Burlington alone. a majority of their work is designing huge ass summer houses in the in NY. out and around the Saranac region. very few VT homes. but these houses in NY range from 1 mil to 10 mil +. crazy shit.
my work was done mostly for master planning ski areas. smugglers notch, etc. that has slowed significantly.

FWIW,

Some people will start selling their WRXs now that the STi is coming out this April...

And, those that are still sitting on the lots, you might get a decent discount on, just play up that Subaru has already changed the headlights again, so the current one "will look really dated"...

Worth a shot....

Our newest consideration is a 97' Jetta GLS w/ 64k miles, their asking $8995.00 fully serviced. I might look at it today or tomorrow. The same dealer had a beautiful 68' or 69' Camaro inside their showroom and he had just sold it for 29k! The buyer was going to make it into a dragster. It's a fun carlot to visit, they always have a rather eclectic lot of vehicles and a good reputation to boot.

I found a place like that in NH one time we were up there. THey had everything from Vettes, Vipers, Bimmers, MB's etc, to old muscle cars and even really cheap imports. I could have spend a few days there test driving.

There are a ton of "Rebuilt" WRX's on ebay going to 16K, not bad. If any were closer to me, I might go take a look. Just love them.
