My temp gauge jumps a bit upon start, then stays to cold always. Where should I start to fix this? Is there a more commom culprit? Voltage regulator? Sensor? Thank you for any input.

I had the same problem with my 88RRC after a blown heater hose. I replaced the sender first. No real change. From there, I replaced the themostat. Now the guage appears to be OK. I am still losing about 6 oz. of coolant a week, though. Still looking.

Your electric sensor may be bad. I just in aftermarker mechanical gauages, and they work much better. The sensor is located right behind the water pump, and in front of the thermostat.

Hey Snowman.. if your temp sender (the one to the gauge) is part number prc-7918, heres how you test it and your gauge. that part fits all 3.9's and alot of 4.0 and 4.2. go to your local electronics store and buy 4 resistors 5¢
cents apiece, all 1/2watt. 18ohm, 22ohm,83ohm,182ohm.pull the gauge off the sender, alligator clip one end of the resistor to the gauge wire and ground out the other end. 18ohms will take ur gauge to the red, 22ohms top of white, 83 ohms dead center, 182ohms bottom of white. then buy a 5/7$ digital multi meter, to check the sender, hook the red(hot) lead from the multi meter to the temp sender, ground the black, start your rover cold, when your engine warms, the resistance will drop, 130°F will register 182ohms, 160°-106ohms, 180°-84ohms, 190°-79ohms. the resistance of other sending units are different, so this only applys to the prc-7918.good luck and let me know if you need anything else. Throw that crap gauge out and get a real gauge. Tom Hyslip is right on the money. I got rid of that damn fool gauge last year and never looked back.
