Hi Guys: I've got oil in one of the front hubs of my 94 Rangie. I guess this means that an oil seal has failed. I looked in the manual and they call for a special tool to install the new seal. Is it really necessary to use the tool or can it be done using ordinary hand tools? How difficult is this job? Any tips or comments most welcome. Andy C |

It's a simple job, and only requires one "special" tool to fit the hub nuts. If no one has a posting on how to do this, I have an article on my web page. -p |

I have done the shortcut method - disconnect brake caliper and hang out of the way; take out 6 axle flange bolts; withdraw entire hub assemble including axle. Replace axle seal and swivel seal. Refit hub assembly to axle with new gasket. The only problem with this method is the hub is very heavy and refitting to axle is a fiddly process to get the axle to fit back into the diff. Tip - before originally withdrawing the hub, find something around the garage to support it on at the exact height off the floor you'll have it when putting it back in. Then you can forget about supporting it vertically while you align it in. |
