This is more a gee-whiz item than a real problem, but I've been wondering how many under-the-seat CD changers have been trashed by drivers putting their trucks into deep water and the slosh running into the cab and under the seats? I've always been a little bothered by the location and exposure the changer has to the water problem. I realize I'm comparing apples and grapefruit but when I had a series 88 I often forded water and had the interior's flooded to where I had to open doors to drain the thing. Is this a real problem with Disco's or am I tilting at windmills

LOL Dom.... That's the same exact thing that happened to me @ Wurtsboro. Like you, I was a former CD Changer owner.

Strange thing is, I was also with Dean at that time. Let's see, Dean; D1; stalled under water; cd changer...hmmm.... LOL

Will someone please tell me why LR tells us to move the changer when wading?
But not the ECU?

cause you can get an aftermarket CD changer but if you ruin the ECU you have to pay them $2,000 for a new one. :)

this happened to me too!!!!! See photo gallery under grant lawson.I turned my cd off and then unplugged the unit. When i got home I removed the player and "hung it to dry" for a few days in the sun or with the occasional blast from a hair dryer. when all looked well i cleaned up the unit with some rubbing alcohol and q-tips. then let it all
"hang" for a couple more days. Re installed and ....................HAPPINESS!!!!!!!!!!
Sometimes when i change the cartridge up,it has dirty silt on it still but no problems.
About the ECU. A member of my club and I had a brief discussion about this. Will the ECU be effected by a longer patch cord(ie: does AC/DC resistance in the cable affect the whatever in the ECU?) If not maybe a longer one can be sourced and installed in the cab of the truck somewhere???Has anyone ever shrink wrapped it?
My ECU cover is now sealed up with grease, just trying to excercise due diligence.
What do you think?

I got this idea from my rc cars. Some of the older ones I have Came with a baloon to put over the reciver and some dialectric grease as well as a zip tie. I went to the local party store and they had a baloon large enough that i did the dame wth my discovery. I havent been able to test it yet but there is only a very small hole which is pluged by grease.

I didn't kill my CD changer but I did lose my weather band receiver and my amp was out for a while (both under the passenger side seat). What's worse is I put the CD changer and everything but the amp in with heavy duty velcro specificly so I could take it out before playing in something deep. :( I still miss that weather radio voice....

lol... I can't wait until I see someone with a Maximog setup and put HEPA filter units up on the roof with high CFM fans to keep positive pressure in the cabin. :)

now I havent waterproofed my disco (but I have a number of other trucks) so take this all with a grain of salt

if I where to decide to make a disco into a submarine safe vehichle the first thing I would do was search out some waterproof military amo cans. they have nice snap open and closed covers that you can mount components in. then when you need to go diving all you need to do is lock the covers down tight to protect the devise. then you could pop them back open once your clear of the water to allow axcess and cooling. by using a rubber grommet and silicone sealer you could run the wire harness in and make it all good to go.

Is there an alternative to using the "factory" cd changer from Land Rover, maybe one out of a BMW? Im trying to find a way to put a changer on my 97 discovery using the existing wiring and not paying $500 for the factory cd changer. If not, does anyone know if the CD deck off a Freelander will plug in to the existing wiring to replace the tape deck?

Hey, do you think I can rig a snorkel on mine? Lol, off road you just need the tunes from your 4.0 v8 and you will be set! Ohh.. and thing of bondo :)

Just observation here for those who might get stuck like that, if your rear end is down, and you are being pulled forward (as is a most common case) then ask that person to stop pulling you out when your door line is above the water level, and while your rear end is still lower than the front. You can then empty the back doors. Otherwise, as you slam on the brakes when level, all the water is gonna follow Newton's law of momentun, and you can say goodbye to your CD and/or ECU.

Dean

Oh, and MTs are good value too:)
