Up under the truck today messin around and I noticed that with the truck in Neutral (tcase in H or L), if I hold the rear prop shaft, the front prop shaft has about 1/4" slop of turn. Likewise, if I hold the front tight, the rear has about the same. Ujoints are all fine, f/r diff seem fine. Also, if I grab both at the same time and twist, there's about an inch of play and clunking inside the tcase. If I twist harder (by hand) I can feel it give some more and hear a little more clunking inside the tcase. Am I paranoid (also having some AT problems) or does this sound normal? |

Normal driveline windup. Same reason you get the clunk and gear noise while going into gear |

I have the same problem on my 96 Disco. I have the tcase input shaft spline wear problem. I assume the clunking inside the tcase comes from the extra slop between the transmission output shaft splines and corresponding splines inside the tcase. Most noticeable when shifting into reverse you get that lovely ker-chunk sound. Anyone tried to fix this problem on their own? Any ideas on the cost and parts involed? |
