I was thinking of trying to find a nice older D1, and getting a TDI installed, either at ECR or anywhere else. Does anyone have any idea how much that would run????? I'd like to keep both buying the disco and getting the engine installed to under $12k. Not sure if that is possible, but worth a try.

Zak I've seen others on here quote $18k+ just for a diesel conversion.

A guy here spent $25k putting a vett engine into his Range Rover.

Ouch!!! I did a search on in hte archives and found similar numbers. That sucks!!! I was really hoping to make a disco a nice daily driver with good MPG. Oh well. Just have to get a boring car. :(

Hi All,

My cousin is currently in the process of "retrofitting" a Peogeot 2.4L Turbodiesel engine and 5 speed •••••• to his 88 Classic Rangie (basically, a non-ABS Disco underneath). He is adding a big intercooler from a Volvo 850 turbo. The peugeot has a torque-tube surrounding the driveshaft as it exits the ••••••.
He is going to shorten the torque tube and put a flange on it that mates with the Rover transfer case. He will then shorten the Peugeot driveshaft and machine a spline that mates with the TC input.

This engine has been used with a lot of success on heavily-laiden 109s in europe, and he has tapped into a lot of expertise in England as to how to tune this engine to run well in Rovers. Supposedly, this was the engine used in earlier European diesel Jeeps.

He's a little eccentric, and loves the smell and rattle of diesels. However, he is also very thoughtful and detail-oriented. He might just pull this off. I'll post his results, if he succeeds.

PS. He bought the Rangie for $2500 with 250k miles (runs and wheels just fine). He bought the engine & trans from a crashed Peugeot (68k miles), that had been "obsessively maintained" for $250. His goal is to have a diesel Range Rover for about $3000 total investment. Hey may just pull it off.

the 5 cylinder MB diesel bolts up to a ZF •••••• and is cheap to buy...so whys it gonna cost 25k to put a oil burner in a disco?

yes if you pay somebody 60hr it would cost that much but it sure dosent seam that tough to me????

They use Isuzu Deisels in Austrailia in their Defenders with flat beds in the Army - must be an OK match... Probably get one out of one of those ugly delivery trucks in the U.S.

I am with Muskyman: a MB diesel is a good idea. MB diesel beaters are cheap. I have seen them in Series LRs and it is a simple looking install that was basically "one wire" and fuel hookup. It will be a long winter here in MN, maybe I will do some research.

Where have you seen the MB? I would like to look into it too, especially if there are photos and any information on "how" "how much" etc...

Discovery OR Series IIa - either would be good.

That is an incredible Series III. I've found a few around here for pretty good prices, and wouldn't mind trying to find a MB diesel. So, who wants to come over and help me install an engine?????

Just got an Email today from www.britrest.com
he has a 200 TDi auto coming in that a customer backed out of. this guy is very reasonable and in CDN dollars, Tell him i sent you there!

Thanks for the picture of my truck! That was taken at the top of Mohawk Mt. in North West Ct a couple weeks ago.
The Mercedes 2.4 is a great little engine for the Series. It's dead reliable, great on fuel and can be had very cheap. It doesn't have any more power or speed than the old 2.25 but it's a pretty easy install and can be done by anyone with a little mechanical know-how. When you refer to the "MB" is that the old Jeep/Willys military MB?

I also checked into the conversion from east coast rovers. they have to change the ••••• and transfer as well as the gear ration in the axles to get the proper power band. They only charge 45 an hour for the swap but figure the price of the engine ••••• and the transfer case alone OUCH. Go to the site below there is alot of info.
One swap that I did see although not in a rover was a simple one into a chevy.The owner used a isuzu cabover Deisel motor and ••••• from one of those delivery trucks it was street legal and had alot of tourque. The owner of the vehicle said it was easier then swaping a chevy motor in one wire hook up is the words he used. Parts are also available in the usa.

Zak, I saw a 109 with the MB engine in it here in NY. The guy is from Long Island. I'll get in touch with him and try to get some more info.
