Bought a new TD5 in March 02 and it failed to start in -6C 3 days later. Weather warmed up and dealer found no problem.

Now weather has turned cold again and its difficult to start below 0C.

Engine always fires and runs very roughly for a few seconds with no response to the throttle, after a few seconds of running rough the engine either dies or suddenly begins to run normally with a much crisper note. The process can be repeated 2 or 3 times before it begins to run normally.

Over last few weeks my dealer has tried reprogramming the ECU and then replaced the ECU. The replcement ECU causes the glow plug light to stay on longer, has given me a quieter engine once its running (no harsh combustion sound when pulling away) and a less exhaust smoke under hard acceleration when warm. But you've guessed - no change to the starting problem.

Dealer has also now replace a fuel return valve at the back of the cylinder head but again no improvement! He is now in discusion with Land Rover Technical for guidance.

Anyone else had similar experience? - Any solutions or suggestions?

The majority of us are in the USA. And in the USA we do have the option of getting the a Td5, only the petrol engine is available to us. :( So most of us won't be able to help you there.

I drive a f450 powerstoke at my job. in the cold mornings it does the same if i do not let it warm up for 15 min. If you have a cold weather package there should be a plug in the grill for a block heater. You can use a lamp timer to turn on the the block heater three hours before you start your truck. this way the block will be warm so the truck runs and the heater will blow warm air. If there is no block heater you will have to start the truck and let it idle to warm up.

Block heater and diesel fuel anti waxing additive will both help. That fuel line is exposed along its length to the cold.

No cold weather package but neighbours have a similar Disco II TD5 and which always starts 1st time. Being in Scotland UK the diesel will have anti waxing agents as standard (at least that on sale during the winter).

Dealer at one point said they can all do that but after mine took two attempts one morning he tried two others parked next to mine all night and they both started 1st time!

Dealer has now replaced fuel return valve which made no difference and fuel temp sensor. After this last change it started 1st time at -4C but weather then warmed up and I will need a few more cold starts to convince me problem is fixed!

I would invest in a block heater.. also check to see what shape the fuel filter is in.. if it is the water seperater type.. you have have some gelling in the filter..

the block heater would be a worth while investment..

have the dealer check the cam sensor if it is going out the truck will have a hard time starting.
