FYI - a stock P38A Range Rover 150 amp alternator will go right into any serpentine Disco - outs out about 125 amps at idle and closer to 200 at speed. Bill |

Bill, Does that also apply to the old 3.5 V8i in '88 and before RR? The ones with the 4 V-belts and not the serpentine belt? If yes, can you please provide me with a part # (or a GM/Delco part #)? And if no, does ANYONE know of how I can slap in there a 120+ AMP alternator? Thanks in advance to all |

Nadim, Yes and no: yes, you can put the alternator in with no problems - it is a small case unit, but you have to fab your own lower mount for the alternator and also find a pulley to fit the v-belt system. Saw it this weekend setup on an 88 RRC - looked factory the way he had it done. He ended up having a pulley machined to work with the v-belts, but I bet there would be one available if you looked hard enough. Though, in your case (location) might be easier to have one machined. I don't have a Rover p/n, but apparently it was a standard P38A rangie alernator - 150 amp Bill |

Also, a stock D2 alternator will probably work. It's a straight bolt-on to a GEMS D1. I'm not sure what model Disco you have. The D2 alternator outputs 120 amps. Thanks, Mike B. |

Just one thought guys, the v belt pulley will have a hard time keeping up with a heavy alternator load. Not enough surface area on the V belt and therefore you might hear sqealing of teh belt under a severe load. If you overtighten the belt then your bearings might die early. Anything above a 100 amp alternator requirment should prolly have a double v belt or a surpentine conversion for longevity sake. |
