Anybody know of info for GM engine swap? I have a D2 with 100K miles and am considering an engine swap b/c if I'm going to get 15 MPG, then I wouldn't mind having around 300HP. Doesn't have to be info on just GM engines.

I assume you have a 4.0 GEMS motor. Why not just drop in a 4.6 short block (or long block, if necessary) and reprogram the ECU. In the long run, you'll save a whole lot of time, money and aggravation than trying to "make fit" nearly everything to accomodate an alien GM motor.

On second thought, I believe the Rover 4.0 and 4.6 blocks are one and the same. If your block is in good shape, you may be able to put in a 4.6 crankshaft and piston rods, etc. -- and maybe bore it out to a 5.2 and use oversize pistons. In any case, you'll need to reprogram the ECU fuel map so it won't run too lean and burn up. Check the RPi website.

I believe to get 5.2 you'll need to resleeve not just rebore and you'll need custom pistons.

what the difference between a long block as opposed to a short block?????? Which one is better

neither is "better"

a long block is a short block with heads on it

Short block a lot cheaper. All the parts off the 4.0 will bolt on the 4.6. BE CAREFUL with the flywheel spacer because it is different in the 4.0 vs 4.6 GEMS engines, not sure on the Bosch. Would have to call the dealer and see if the part numbers for the spacers is the same. I screwed this up and crushed the front pump of a tran$. I'm also not sure if the shim difference is for the different engine sizes or the different transmissions that came behind both.
4.0 = 4hp22 and 4.6 = 4hp24.
The 4.6 will bolt up to the 4hp22 though

I didn't know the piston sleeves were removable. Is that how ECR makes their 5.2 motors? I'd always heard that if you had a sleeve slip due to overheating or a cracked block, that it was not repairable.

Based on what I've read the 5.2 is strictly a stoker motor. The bore on the sleeves is limited to 94 mm... I suppose there's room for a slight over bore but i think the stroke on the 4.0 4.6 is increased to like 90 mm to make a 5.0 and to 92mm to make a 5.2.. There are adaptors to put in SBF engine but the weight of this engine might really piss off your springs... I guess they put in 6.5 GM smokers so they have to make BIG springs...

I considered doing a 350 cid swap into my tired 88 Rover Classic as well. As mentioned above, there are other alternatives that probably make more sense. Consider all of the items needed from electronics, headers, adapters (check Marks in Aus. - $$), and then axle upgrades (for that horsepower - even on the D2 axles!).The list goes on and on. I found that it was one of those thoughts that sounded great at the outset, and then would turn into a nightmare quickly. You have to consider "how much do I want to re-engineer a Land Rover?" in my humble opinion. It can be done, and there was just a Rover Classic on E-bay with a 400 cid Rodek engine - the guy stated he had $60K in this 1990 Rover... It did not sell, and I don't believe the bids got over 10K.
