This may sound dumb..... how hard is it to wash and wax your Disco with a full expedition rack (like the Safety Devices rack) installed? Do you normally remove the rack to wax? How hard is that to do?

I don't yet own a Disco, but the Garmin rack on my old J**p Cherokee is a PITA to work around.

I noticed how tight up against the roof the SD rack brackets are - they look as if one would always have trouble working around them. The other brands that have more upright mounts look better in this respect.

When you mount lights on the rack, do you install quick release wiring connectors? If so what type?

Comments? TIA!

If you wash and wax it, it will be clean... I don't get it?

I'm a little confused by this wash and wax the roof thing? If the puddles don't clean it you mean you wash the truck? with soap and water? huh?

Seriously, on those rare occasions, the pressure hose at the local u-wash it with quarters has a wax option....thats as good as it's ever gonna be for me!

Yeah, if you clean the dirt off, what ever it's stuck too may fall off.

Somehow I just knew I would get these sorts of responses. So, none of you guys EVER hand washes or waxes your rig? Do you really think that hot wax that you get at the car wash is actually doing anything good for your truck?

Just how long do you expect your paint to last anyway?

How about a serious answer, PLEZ?

What do you want??? Secret Asian waxing technique? Either take the rack off to wax it or suck it up and spend forever sliding your fingers under the bars.

John, I will add that the paint on my 88RRC was tough. I haven't had my 99D2 long enough to see if it's the same, but the 14 year paint on my 88 looked great with just a basic wash.

No Jeep comparisons please!

john

it would be easiest to remove the rack
for cleaning. if you are really concened about the roof you can

1: install the 'clear bra' 3m vinyl on the roof and just change it every few years.
2: install a roof rack 'cover' (obvioulsy a custom job)

solid flooring also help keep it cleaner -

good luck!!

I was giving you an honest answer. To me it ain't about beauty, it's about function. If the roof lasts as long as the engine then I win. Of all the complaints about LR that I've heard, I can't say I ever remember hearing about paint problems, so I think they are minimal. I just wholesaled my 1990 Acura Legend with 285,000miles on it and no roof rust at all whatsoever! I never waxed it in 13 years! Just annual car washes whether it needed it or not. Niggling mechanical issues were ultimatly the demise of the Acura. If my Disco even approaches that kinda performance, I'll be tickled. On the subject of the hot wax at the power spray wash....I was dead serious, thats the best it gets from me!

I find that a light coating of wet dirt on the roof, if allowed to dry, serves as great protection from both UV and UVB rays. Additionally, if applied to the bonnet, virtually eliminates any and all trace of glare from auxiliary roof lighting.

As Forest Gump said so succinctly: "Stupid is as stupid does."

It may be a stupid question, but my enquiring mind still wants to know...

I am working on that. It's a slow process, but I am getting there..... Actually, I am going more for the rough, unfinished, primer look. Panel by panel.... :)

If I go back and double check, I'd bet that the people posting here as never washing/waxing their truck are the same ones that were posting in the "I've got corrosion around my Alpine Windows" thread a couple of months back.

FWIW, I've kept a fresh coat of wax on all of my trucks and have never had a spot of rust on them. That might not seem like much, but, living on a sub-tropical island with nice salty air for 12 years, it's a fact that I'm very proud of.

Just my .02 of the currency of your choice.

I take that back ... one rust hole, on the Rover, from the inside out. Just gotta hate it when water gets trapped under all that foam and carpet.

I waxed my white disco a few months ago for the first time in about 3 years. I did half of the hood and stood back and was amazed. The unwaxed half was very obviously brown compared to the waxed half. That did it for me...every 3 years I'm waxing this thing.

The roof is steel, not aluminimiumnium, axel

Better paint the doors too! They're steel.

John-

Think about it for a moment. There's the disco and it has a rack on top of it. Hand waxing the roof is a pain in the ass. Removing the rack to wax the roof is a pain in the ass. Either way, it's a pain in the ass. Hell, just getting a ladder to work on the center sections of the roof is a pain in the ass - especially if you have the Disco lifted.

That said, you now have a few options:
1- Deal with it (it's a PITA and you just have to live with it being a PITA)
2- Leave it alone (or at least use the jet spray at the u-wash)
3- Hire someone else to do it for you. (Easily the most expensive route but the easiest on you).

I have the D2 Adventure Rack on a D1 and I look at the roof and know it's a PITA to wax. Heck, it was a PITA to wax BEFORE the rack. But I'm one of the guys who doesn't wash and wax on a regular basis.
