i know the device is under the passenger seat, but i don't see where it flashes the codes. i've got the check engine light on and i'm looking at the box under the seat, but i don't see where the code is supposed to flash. or am i supposed to hook up something to it? i do see a very dark looking piece of plastic that may be a window, but either mine isn't working or i obviously don't know what the hell i'm doing, and this wouldn't be the first time. :)

I had the same question awhile ago (I have a '94 as well). That dark box IS the readout. If you can't see a code it's because it isn't showing you one. The unit is attached under the seat by a rubber grommet-like thing and if you pull it off, the harness is long enough to let you pull the unit into the footwell to get a better look at it. If you shine a flashlight at it you'll see that the box is see-through and you'll see the LED panels inside.

It's apparently well known that the OBDC on the Series I is notorious for not working.

thanks very much, jim. i don't feel like a complete idiot now. i'll try that and see if it gives me a better view. i wonder how much that little unit is if it's crapped out. and, naturally, i'll check the fuse too. at least i know that i was looking in the right place. i was half expecting someone to tell me that i was looking at the amp, lol. let me know if you need any heater core or stereo help. i've become a recent authority on those 2 topics. ;)

Actually, when those units don't show a code it's not necessarily because they crapped out, it's just that they very often give inaccurate codes or, in your case, show no code at all, so I wouldn't pursue replacing (or even repairing) something of dubious quality to begin with.

Hopefully I won't have to take you up on your offer of heater core/stereo advice.

Are these code boxes in all Discos? My CD changer is under the passenger seat and I didn't see any other box underneath.

No, OBD2 (96 and later) just have a connector below the steering column. The good news is that most OBD2 readers will read most of the codes, i.e. the ones that are not Rover specific.

Ok. Thanks Axel.
