i drove the (96) disco for about 300 mi last Saturday, and noticed some odd quirks.

first, after a long highway drive, upon a first brake application the truck will pull hard to the left. after that, it'll brake more or less straight. if i tap the brake pedal every once in a while (very lightly), this doesn't occur.

second, it becomes rather squirrelly when i hit some rough pavement (that is, I-5 in the City of Angels, between the Southern city limit and Hwy 110, Hwy 110 also ugly).

My 1st thought was the loose right front wheel bearing causing the pads to spread more than they should. Came home, lifted the front end, no play. Rotors unscored, unglazed, pads ~1/4 in. left. Swivel housings nice and snug, no play. No play in the steering joints, steering damper new Bilstein.

Went over the truck - no loose trailing arms bushings that I could detect by rocking and rolling the Disco, no bent trailing arms brackets.

While I could personally live with these quirks, I'd like them fixed or at least attributed to something. I don't know whether they are related or not.

BTW, my 89 rangie also exibits similar behavior - very soft brake pedal upon first application, and it's a white-knuckle drive if all of a sudden the road changes to worse and makes a sharp turn.

any ideas?

As far as the braking problem: Would air in the brake line at or near the r-hand caliper cause this? If there was air in the line the result would be good brake action at the left caliper causing sharp left turn. The occasional tap on the brakes prevents this by keeping the brakes "pumped up".

Would this make sense or is it BS?

it would, except for where would the air come from?

besides, my vast experience with air in the brake lines tells me that the time the "improved" braking would last after the tap on the pedal is about a couple of seconds, it bleeds off fast. In my case, a tap on the brakes "lasts" me about a mile or two.

I haven't pulled out the rear wheels and didn't look at the pads or calipers yet...

Driver Error, sure :)

"my car pulled hard to the left when I stepped on brake pedal..."
"that's because you don't know how to brake!"

Could it be worn panhard bushings?

The real problem is the fact that you live on the West coast, well...I won't get into that...
