OK, so unless I can someday own a Defender 110 with A/C, nice seats and an auto transmission - aaaaaahhhh... Defender....

I will be keeping my Discovery and making it into the perfect Discovery. I will be getting a MD or HD suspenssion upgrade this summer. I already have the adventure rack. I am getting ready to connect my work light and some fog lights. And I know we all have different tastes, but I want some photos of your perfect Discovery. Interior setups and exterior setups. Also, give me an estimate for cost factors. We all have different tastes, I'm not looking for an off-road monster - just the perfect Discovery.

DI or DII? You might get some ideas from my DII. Seems to do pretty much anything that I ask of it. Plus, it's my daily driver and takes the family everywhere. My wife parks her car on Friday and it doesn't move again until Mon morning. In 26 months I've put over 40K miles on it.

Greg, I like the mount you have on the back door, and I like your rear bumper. I wish I knew how to weld, I need to take a class this summer. Your suspension is a little much for me though!

Thanks

Here is a fairly recent pic of my disco. Its probably not exactly what you are looking for, but maybe it will help you. This is probably more of a off road Disco than you are looking for. There are more pics in my gallery. Please feel free to ask me any questions.....

Here is a pic of the back of my Disco. It doesnt show much of the interior, but may help you. I will try to find more pics of the inside of my disco.
FWIW, the pelicans are a 1650, 1600, 1400(the black ones), and two 1300s(the yellow and orange ones.)

I checked out that ECR D1 and it's neat but not THAT neat. I get pretty hot and bothered by the 300 TDI but all the rest is pretty commonplace here at the kewl dizko summit (dweb). My two big complaints are the fender flares and the spoiler. If you need to fit big tires and hack fender (like everyone out there). Just saw and then roll or sand the edge. Don't put those jeep wings on it!!! And that spoiler? Does it come with a coffee can exhaust?

Oy vey.

Britt, my brother and I went up to some trails we found north of Beacon Rock, easy day trip, back by noon. Also, some fun day tripping to Tillamook, but that was spur of the moment, never been there before, and only had one truck - so nothing serious. Although I did have a lot of fun, and got my first dent. The Washington pics (all three or four of them) are on my web site. I will put up the Tillamook pics in a few days. Got to learn to take more pics when I'm out. We should get together and go someday though!

Those Pelicans are nice but I can't justify spending that amount of money on boxes. I went to Lowes and picked up a couple of latchable boxes similer to the 1650's for $20 bucks apiece. On the other hand if you can afford it, having the best available is nice.

those lowes/home depot boxes leak water in rainstorms when your driving, tools rust to death in them. they also break on cold days like today -1 here today. the pelicans are just plain sweet and really not that pricey for the quality.

Which trails did you run in Tillamook Bailey? That is where I got my first dent a few weeks after getting my 95 Disco. Mine is bone stock (even Michelin road tires), and I was able to go places a modified Jeep Cherokee and Wrangler had trouble with (They had lockers, 35 & 33" tires, 3 and 5" lifts respectively). Were the trails north of Beacon Rock in the Pinchot forest?

Not having been around Rovers much yet, but by looking at other ppl's rigs, I would have to say the perfect set-up would be an OME HD lift, winch, bull-bar, sway bar quick disconnects, 31-33" tires, recovery, maintennance, and first aid gear stowed in compartments in the back, adventure rack, offroad lights on the bull bar, the rack, and a couple directly under the truck (light up what's right under your bumper/tires), sliders, diff guards, skid plates, aftermarket rear bumper (2nd time out I tore mine off) and of course a 2" receiver hitch.

I would imagine that would keep your truck decent enough to drive every day, and great offroad. Then if you had more money to spend, upgrade the axles, and install lockers.

Once again, I am partially talking out my butt since I don't have first hand experience.

Thanks Ho! But ad the roof rack to it now!

Brian, the Disco above is mine, I have even worse tires than the originals... mine are Firestone, and I can't wait till they are worn down so much even my wife can't argue that it needs new tires. Right now, they have about 30k on them, and about as much traction as a Jack Russell on hard wood floors.

Anyway, that is why I got the dent in Tillamook, I was not even moving, just got into the truck, and in putting it in gear, it lost traction, slid 4 feet sideways and hit a 3 foot high wall of dirt that was the other side of the trench I was so perfectly straddled only seconds before - this was after a week without rain!

Right now I can't think of what trail number it was, I will have to review the map. But it is one of the only moderate trails in the south-west corner that is suited for 4x4, I went downhill, and it was about 1.2 miles long.

I realize this might be heretic to utter, but: I don't particularly like the look of the ARB or other heavy duty bumpers. I would like to get good enough at welding to be able to manufacture a heavy duty bumper that looks like the original!! I am now going to put a work light under my truck - great idea Brian.

Oh, and the trails that are North of Beacon Rock really are just north of Beacon Rock. If you drive East on 14 towards B.R. you will turn north about 1-2 miles before reaching the park. It is a main road, but it leads up to a set of powerline roads, a waterfall, and a gravel road that has at least one major 4x4 trail - rocks, trenches, trees, etc. The better way to go that we did not get to explore however, is called Maybee Mine Road. It is on most road maps of the area, and there is a campground up in the area.

Bailey, that road will connect with another one (actually turns into a trail) and will go all the way to Stevenson. You can start on Wasougal River Rd. and take back trails all the way out to stevenson/skamania. Drop me an email when you want to head out.

The pelicans are well worth the money in my opinion. The way i looked at it, they will never need to be replaced. And if something were to go wrong with one of them, the cases come with a lifetime gurantee.
It is also nice to know that what you pack in them will be well protected and dry at the end of the day...

Britt and Bailey, want to get together and drive some trails? I live in East Vancouver (162nd and Ward Road). I've only been out to the timber roads in Yacolt, and Tillamook State Forest (University Firepower, Powerline -just before and after the washed out section- as well as a few others not on the map off of mile marker 33 on highway 8). I would like to go to some areas closer to the Vancouver/Portland area. If you guys are interested drop me a line. I can't do anything this weekend since I am helping my brother-in-law put his transmission back in his Bronco.

I use the Lowe's type boxes as well. They aren't water or dust proof as others have pointed out, but for $6.00, they did in a pinch. I did a search for Pelican Cases and found several websites that sell the 1600 w/ no foam for under $80.00 ($98.00 if you wanted foam). Considering the durablity and quality you get, I may invest in a couple of the Pelicans. I just need to figure out the best storage layout for the cargo area.

Greg I have plenty of traction control and I like the inside of the truck to be orderly and not a mass of boxes. The rack is a double edged sword. It gets things up out of the way but you pay for it in other ways. Inside the truck I have the big Fridge and the laptops\electronics. Keep in mind that when we travel its ALWAYS a WE. And with two of us we carry twice as much shit. Long days on the road also make it a must to be able to unpack and setup fast if need be. I find that having things spread out between the rack and the inside of the truck makes it easier to get to things when you need to without alot of BS.
As far as the pelican argument (Another old one). Well , its just silly. There are about a billion reasons that the pelicans are superior for our uses. Having things dry when you need them is paramount. Having things clean when you need them is paramount. Having things easily transportable and transferable is paramount. Last but not at all the least is that , Still having the things is paramount. You put some tupperware on the roof and let a few nice branches get into them or some wind at 70MPH on the interstate and see if all your crap sticks with you. I am betting it will end up strewn along the road or trail at some point. I have gouges in some of these roof pelicans of ours that go half way through the case (From sharp limbs) , but the overall rigidity of the cases keeps them from collapsing and working their way out of (Or being ripped out of) the bindings that hold them on. Because they are so rigid it also takes alot less to keep them secure. Yeah they cost more then the tupperware , but most of the time , things you can always rely on to get the job done time and time again do !
Greg , you will notice I was still wearing all of my flaps at that point in time. Truley perfect!! :)

Warning, my inner cheap bastard has taken over! I wanted to add a few pics. Again, are these Lowes boxes as good as Pelicans? No. But for $80 bucks in boxes and $20 bucks in foam I can have four for a little more than half the price of one Pelican. I can easily fit 4 in the back of my D2 and if I pull out my seats I could squeeze in at least two more. Now that I think of it, I could add a little structural strength with some layers of reinforced tape. Man, the cheap bastard in me is a powerful force. Again, Pelican people...enjoy your boxes and the peace of mind that comes with them, but I can't justify paying that much for boxes.

I have a couple of Pelican like ammo boxes, that are as strong, open on both ends, water proof, fit a quart of oil and a bunch of small tools each, about 12" x 10" x 4" inside dimensions, only cost $4.00, and best of all they say, "30mm High Explosive Shell" on the side!

I also have a 20" x 12" x 5" inside dimension all metal mortar crate that I bought for $8.50.

I found my map of Tillamook, I went on a loop from Hwy 8, Jordan Creek Road, Phipps Creek Road, and back down Fox Ridge Creek Road. At the top we could see all the way to Mt. Bachelor!! The trail we took was #41, Firefox - downhill, mind you. It would be a hoot coming up, but I would need a winch, a locker, and probably better insurance. I will take the Series back over to Tillamook when I get it out of the barn. It is just too tempting to take the trails and say, "So what if I get a dent?"

And I would love to go out towards Beacon Rock again, but have absolutely no idea when I could make it!

Just let me know when you are able to go out again and we can probably all work something out. I met a guy with a Disco a few months back at a Safeway a few blocks from my house. I asked him all about his rig, and he was more than willing to show me around and share stories. As luck would have it last week I saw him again in the parking lot with my Disco. I got his name and number so I am sure he would love to go out as well.

Well Rob, I don't do welding or sheetmetal. I mainly machine misc. parts, fixtures, gages, etc. from solid pieces of metal. Here is a pic of one fixture we made. Its function is to locate and hold a housing which is going to put into a CNC milling maching for cuts, drill holes, tap holes, yada, yada. Just to give you an idea, typical tolerences on a fixture such as this one would be in the +- 0.0005" range and sometimes +- 0.0001" Its a high stress job but I love doing it. And musky, those pelicans are definitly looking like a bargin right now

Those Zero cases are bling-bling bull***t. I grew up in a house with an Anvil sales rep for a father and he had a bunch of those Zero cases around - total crap. You'll need more than D.J.'s pastel tank top and white suit to get all the scratches out after just one ride in the back of your pimped-out Ferrari.

I move a lot of high-end gear in my job and the only thing we'll ship in is tour-duty A.T.A. cases or Peli. If it's worth moving or you have to move it more than one time, it's worth Peli.

I am pretty sure they are there to prevent damage from branches

Carter, are you sure? I thought they were for keeping the roof rack from flying off! Show's what I know.

hmmm, thats true they could also serve that purpose. They would also make good tight ropes for circus midgets to walk across.

they are to keep brances off windsheild...thus the name "limb risers". they are pretty much useless, they arent on my truck about 95% of the time. spend your money on something else...

Where is the Beacon Rock. I just got Dunlop RT's 245/75-16's on my Disco and want to go for a Trail Ride and try them out. A buddy just got a Jeep with the Factory Offroad package (cheesy skidplates, 1" factory lift, better shocks, towhoods, HighOutput Alternator, etc) and a 5-sp for $2,500. Actually has decent tires as well so I thought we'd go play around off road. :-)
I'm in Seattle area. Looking for something not further away than maybe 1 hour or so.
Also need to head north to Grey's Harbour, up by Burlington, 2/3 way to the Canadian Border. Any good trails up there???
THanks
Todd

Ya, the reason it is in the line between the hood and the wing is that it holds it their nicely. The loops around the brushguard are just held by friction, I've never had them come off and slide down the side, but they could if the right branch hit them. I run the wire up and connect it in the middle of the roof rack with one turnbuckle. The cool thing is, I did this all without spending money, I had all of this stuff lying around left over from my aerial banner towing days. They do help with branches and stuff here in the Northwest. But other than that, I only put them on when I am going to the British Field Meet.

Does the British Field Meet happen every year? Is that the one in Bellevue at the Community College. I only caught about 15minutes last year as I did it on my Lunch Break but this summer I'd like to come and park my rig there and hang out all day.
Is Beer allowed?
When will it be.
Thanks
Todd (still wondering where Beacon Rock is, not to mention other good PNW Offroading Trails)

Todd, Beacon Rock is on the Columbia River. Hwy 14. I've got pics of the Portland ABFM on my web site. It's pretty cool, a lot of Rovers show up. Get to drive on the Motocross track.
