The issue of to CDL or not to CDL is a big one amoung Rover owners. Most of us want a CDL - we like control. But also, there is the question of what happens when my Traction Control System flops? For all but the hard core off-roaders however, TC is probably just fine for most off or on-road situations. From what I have heard, even a Freelander takes mud, ice, snow, hills, etc just fine with TC.

I talked to a Discovery, Series IIa 109/88 owner, who was also a salesman at the local Land Rover Center. He said that the electrics on the Traction Control won't fail, so the need for a CDL is now in the past - ya right. TC is great, and it does take the place of the CDL and other locking differentials - untill you are out in the bush and the electrics fail - then you are stuck.

That begs the question: Have any of you had your TC fail???

I have a intermittant problem SLAB's computer that renders TC, ABS and Hill decent ineffective on my 99D2. The lights and bells will go off every few days (or hours) then resets itself when I turn off the rig.

Two points for CDL -

1. I believe it still is possible to overwhelm the ETC system (have seen it happen)

2. If you bugger part of your drive train (a u-joint, drive shaft, axle, etc), if you have CDL you can still get home. Without CDL you would be stuck.

More evidence - keep it coming.

I was going through deep mud holes and got something wedged between the mudsheild and the rotor. On its way out it effectively shaved my ABS sensor off of the hub. Christmas tree lights and warnings on the dash.

My HDC, TC, and ABS lights came on last week. Taking it into the shop tomorrow to see if it's the SLABS unit, or a wheel speed sensor. Either way, right now I don't have TC. But I have CDL and lockers.

Oh, it's an '00. SLABS was replaced this summer and carries a 12 month warranty. Since I have 53K miles, I'm hoping that's the culprit.

Greg,

What does SLABS stand for?

Yup,

seen it fail on a DII at Carnage Canyon, luckly the driver had a 2001 w CDL and could make it out ok, without it we may have had to tug him out and that would not be pretty.

This sales guide is full of shit, maybe he should spend a day or two working in the service department or surfing this site and see how may are having problems with the ETC. He is a sales guide and is trying to make a sale, I am sure if they had CDL he would be saying

Dave,

you can't complain too much. It got you up obstacles this weekend that locked vehicles couldn't.

While off-roading during the Christmas Holidays on my '00 D2, I noticed the front left tire spinning and I was on D-L4 while going over a berm. Should ETC engage the brake to the wheel?

I am still wondering because the same day, I felt and also saw the lights on the dash showing the ETC at work i.e. uphill with loose dirt and gravel.

I am researching options for CDL but definitely would like to have CDL and a rear locker. Any comments?

My 1999 D2 has both CDL and ETC. ETC can and will be overwhelmed. Even when all is working right. The omission of the CDL is one of the biggest mistakes LR has made. Not bringing it back to the NA market is another.

AL,

can you Blast the mud out or does it kick in enough to hamper proper cleaning?

You can get pretty good spin with the ETC. It will only kick in if there is enough of a difference in speed of one wheel on each axle from the other. So you can still get the 4 wheels going very well. Even to get the ETC to work as it was designed to you need to spin the wheels a little to increase the difference in speed from the wheel with traction to the one without. CDL actually gives you less wheel spin in many situations. But the ETC with CDL combo is very nice. It's much harder to get into a situation where you have no forward movement due to crossed axles.

I really don't mind stuff like the ETC since it's already there if you have ABS. It's just new programming to turn the ABS system into ETC. But I don't want to depend on electronics to get me home. I don't even like the idea of a push button actuator for the CDL (solenoids). The mechanical linkage works just fine. If the ETC fails I can just pull the ABS fuse and lock the transfer case. But the ETC as a replacement for the CDL was bad, bad, bad. Someone in LRNA needs to get fired over that decision for not bringing it back to the US.

Chu,

"Dave,

It had nothing to do with ETC, it was pure skill :)

Chu,

Damn, I was all happy and you had to go and bring me down :(

I think it was your new rear bumper, that thing is slowing you down :) You better put that stock plastic POS back on there so you can keep up!

You're right Musky. 100% But I love to see the look of the face of Jeepers when I cross something and they all ask "You runnin' lockers?" and I say no and I watch their faces as they all respond "No f*ck*n' way!"

One day when I get off my ass I'll add a rear locker. But until then the CDL and ETC get me over most areas offered here in VA.

:)

I still get that w/ out the ETC

Damn, I have put off locking this truck up for SO long but its just incredible what it can do w/ open diffs, plus telling the jeepers/pick-up bubbas "no" is just soooooooo much fun.
