There are LED light bulbs available to replace the 1156 and 1157 bulbs commonly used in brakelights/turn signals/running lights. Has anybody out there tried this on their Rover and have any comments about switching to LEDs? Kinda pricy for the LEDs, so I thought I would ask first.

Example of LED website: www.jamstrait.com

Randall,

I have. They look cool, but light is nowhere close to even 1156 can produce, let alone halogen replacements.

LED's are a great idea (specially considering the rate at which the brake bulbs pop). The problem with the product at Jamstrait is that they are using red LED's which are not the brightest and not necessary because your lens is already red.
There are suppliers who supply them with the latest super bright white LED's which the latest flashlights use.
They will literaly last forever, run cool, have a fast response time and draw very little current. Also there is no filament to break. Also great for the interior lights for those times when you forget to close a door or boot/trunk properly and want to avoid a flat battery.

I have a number of links to sites showing you how to build them yourself, if there is enough interest then I will look for them and post the information here.

I think they are great, my local parts connection stocks red and yellows, and I have replaced all of my rear lights and my front signal lights. I think they are considerably brighter than the regular filaments and I dont have to worry about bouncing around and a light going out. I think its a good way to go, just wish I could get leds for my side markers. ah well. hope that helps!!

Corey

Do you have any brand name or product description that I can search for. Hoping not to get something that works really good... the first time.

After the basic bulbs are replaced, maybe I can figure a way to due the smaller ones.

Thanks to all.

Randall,

they all made by the same outfit.

The LEDs they use are about the brightest, but there's just not enough of them. Also, they are more directional than regular bulbs; that is, if you look into my '68 Wag reverse lights, you'll be blinded for two minutes. But you can't see jack shit unless it is completely dark - and regular-style 1157 bulbs in brake signals provide the most light.

Please distinguish between OEM replacement lamps and big signal lights they use now on city/school buses etc. The latter are not only bright, they are just as bright as DOT requires, and they are rather inexpensive. I was thinking of building them into the rear Disco bumper instead of stock plastic crap.

I've toyed with the idea of LED lights a number of years ago, when only red traffic lights got their first LED lamps. I still have a box with about 500 different LEDs, red, amber, white, etc., but we haven't managed to beat the Xenon bulb.

I specced my new trailer with truck type LEDs. I haven't used the individual LED "bulbs", but I can assert that the 2 inch LED marker lights work great as clearance lights. They would be ideal for aftermarket or custom bumpers. The plastic lenses can crack - I installed clear film over mine so that they would survive a bigger hit. I don't know for a fact that clear ones are available, but I wouldn't be surprised.

Sorry - that tow vehicle isn't a Disco......

So I stopped by a parts store and find a pair of red 1156 LEDs for $17. Put one in my center brake light socket...doesn't work. Put the other one in ...doesn't work. Put incadesent bulb back in...works fine. Check LED bulb with multimeter...no continuity...and I just don't get it.

Will be having a talk with an electrical engineer tommorow.

Sounds like you go the smae type of bulbs, I think I paid $15 or so per pair, I'll take a pic of my rear lights tonite and send it over to Ho to post so you can see what it looks like....when it works.....

Mystery solved as to why the LED bulb didn't illuminate.

Apparently the LEDs have diodes, so I had to switch the leads. In 92 LR only shipped 3000 trucks to the US, and the center brake light was probably spliced into the wiring harness. LR just used two wires with 1/4" female terminals to connect up to the bulb socket. So I just switched them.

This 12-LED bulb is much brighter than the 8watt bulb that it replaces. I will do a search for some more serious LED replacements for the other bulbs.
